The best explanation I have seen for this is that Mary Jo kicked Kennedy out of the car when he made a pass at her, and drove off the bridge herself, alone. Kennedy went back to the party and got taken to town without knowing what happened to her. They decided that it was best if he made up the story about him driving off the bridge.
Wasn't her body found in the passenger seat?
That’s exactly what happened.
The idea that he drove off the bridge then had the composure to roll down the window while upside down get out is impossible.
I think he told her to drive to the beach and hed meet her there.
Not seeing the car he may have assumed she drove home.
I don’t think he knew what had happened until the next day

Suuure.....
I visited Martha’s Vineyard some years ago - the bridge had long since been taken down and replaced by a small Ferry (big raft) to move cars across the 100 foot or so span...and the water isn’t that deep there - one might be able to wade across.
Exactly! If she had been in the passenger seat at the moment of impact the shattered safety glass of the window with the the force of the water would have badly nicked her exposed skin, but there were no abrasions. The rescue diver who retrieved her body said she had no water in her lungs indicating she sufficated in an air pocket behind the drivers seat of the overturned car. Kennedy claimed they went off the bridge between 11:30 and midnight. Deputy Huck Look saw the Kennedy car exiting a secluded spot off Chappaquidick road at 12:45 AM. The book Senatorial Privledge has a thorough account of all the coverups.
