Chappaquiddick: The Still Unanswered Questions About Ted Kennedy’s Fatal Car Crash of 1969
Readers Digest ^ | 9/26/24 | John Narron

Editor’s Note: In November 1979, Senator Edward Kennedy seemed poised to seize the Democratic nomination for president from incumbent Jimmy Carter. But the aura of inevitability was dispelled when questions were once again raised about the fatal car crash at Chappaquiddick ten years before that left long-time Kennedy-clan campaign worker Mary Jo Kopechne dead in a submerged car off a one-lane bridge near Martha’s Vineyard. Kennedy, who had been behind the wheel of the car, escaped to safety and, for reasons never convincingly explained, waited ten hours to report the incident.

Yes, a philanderer

The car spins round and round and round and round and round...

RIP Rush

I thought it was the back seat but, in any case, it wasn’t the driver’s seat!

If it was back seat, I assume there was an airpocket (as some have mentioned), and she had some time to scramble to it, as the heavier front of car would have sunk first.

Exactly! If she had been in the passenger seat at the moment of impact the shattered safety glass of the window with the the force of the water would have badly nicked her exposed skin, but there were no abrasions. The rescue diver who retrieved her body said she had no water in her lungs indicating she sufficated in an air pocket behind the drivers seat of the overturned car. Kennedy claimed they went off the bridge between 11:30 and midnight. Deputy Huck Look saw the Kennedy car exiting a secluded spot off Chappaquidick road at 12:45 AM. The book Senatorial Privledge has a thorough account of all the coverups.

Right. I remember reading that her head was in the air pocket at the back of the car.

Thanks for the update - when we were waiting for the ferry, someone said that was where Fat Teddy Killed Mary Joe - I thought they knew what they were talking about.

I drove to the bridge (Dike Bridge), I wanted to see it. It's not very long and basically takes you over an inlet called Poucha Pond that crosses to the beach. Back then you could take air from your tires and drive to the Beach. After dark, nobody would be there, Kennedy had his mind on bringing the gal to the beach for extracurricular activities, but he was drunk, driving to fast in a hurry, and as the bridge is narrow and at the time had no sides, it was not too difficult to drive off it.

It was upside down in the water. She was found in the back, in an air pocket...

The reenactments had a guy in a scuba outfit, he’s in a car that goes off the bridge. He’s upside down. Took him two or three minutes to get out.

Imagine that you’re Ted Kennedy, you’re drunk, you go off the bridge, you’re in the water, you’re upside down, it’s pitch dark, and you’re telling me you have the presence of mind to roll down the window or open the door and get out. That pure BS.

She was driving the car. They were probably going to meet down at the beach.

Who knows. He walks back to the party. Then goes back to the crash site?
