The museum boasted statues, collectibles, plaster foot and hand prints of the creature, and a detailed exhibit on the Patterson-Gimlin film. Thus, the reason why the 'legend' persists. Ditto for the Loch Ness monster.

I’m not sure. Bigfoot has always seemed strangely plausible to me. (Much more so than ‘extraterrestrial visitors’, despite the many sightings of impossible things in the sky by credible people.)
