Guy was a gifted singer and artist. If he had been willing and able to control his mind and body, he might still be with us.

Sad.

Honestly never really liked his voice. Like Dennis De Young of Styx, just too theatrical for me.

I was in a limo in NYC on the way to do a showcase for Columbia records. The announcement came over the radio and every one of us became emotional. He was such a huge part of the music we all loved growing up. The radio station played “Innuendo” and combined with the sights of NY, it was surreal. Btw, we didn’t get signed to a contract, but in retrospect, I was glad we didn’t. Things turned out for the best.

Freddie was an incredible talent. One of rock’s best front men.

Queen was one of my favorite bands in the 70’s and i saw them live four times from 1977 to 1980, every time at Madison Square Garden.

Everyone says Mercury was a great front man, if not the best- i disagree. I found him to be arrogant, condescending and insulting on stage. Queen also had trouble getting the same sound from their songs on stage compared to vinyl, due to all the overdubbing in the studio.

Once they started with the Fat Bottom Girls, Bicycle, Flash Gordon crap, i split.

I was visiting London from Texas at the time when that announcement was made. Decades later a friend and I visited the street where this house is. Only the warnings on the tall fence and gate were hints that it was something special.

I just got back from a couple of days ago and saw a Freddie Mercury Christmas tree ornament. Tempting….

Anybody miss Queen's last release a couple years ago?  The song by Freddie was remastered and released finally a couple years ago, quite haunting:

So he would be 78 now. Trump’s age. Also Stallone, Bill Clinton, Dolly Parton, Spielberg.

Queen was Queen, not Mercury. He was great but not without Queen.

Mercury’s family was Zoroastrian. His ancestors fled Persia when the Arabs invaded and murdered hundreds of thousands, occupying it (to this day).

As a musician, I listen to music differently than non-musicians. Other musicians on FR know what I mean. That being said, Freddie was a monster vocalist whether live or in the studio. What blew me away about the guy was his incredible intonation and the massive power in his voice. When he opened up and sang full on it really was something. He was a great showman too. Stories from those close to him indicate he was a generous, kind man. And the courageous way he faced his awful death says a lot about him. So he was gay - big deal. A lot of folks in the Arts are.

Clapton was a junkie, Ozzie is an abusive, sadisitic drunk and druggie, Hendrix was an acid head, Lemmy was a massive drinker and sex addict, Jim Morrison was a total drunk and sadistic asshole. I could go on and on and on.

From my perch, as long as someone's not a rapist, woman beater, pedo or murdering lunatic, I don't care what any artist does in their personal life. I enjoy their art or I don't, and that's about it.

Freddie Mercury was a massive talent, and Brian May was the icing on the cake - his daisy-chained Vox sound complimented Freddie's voice perfectly.
