Castro was not in power in 1959, he had part of the country but not all of it. The Bay of Pigs happened in 1961.

John pulled their support when (actually probably because) they were winning.

And after that Castro took over the whole shooting match thanks to his good friend in the white house.

Batista fled the country at the beginning of 1959 and Fidel entered Havana. The American media treated Fidel as a good guy at first.

I can remember my father announcing the Bay of Pigs invasion at dinner when it happened. I think Kennedy thought he could conceal the US involvement if he called off the promised air support.
