There have been very few Presidential or Vice Presidential candidates with beards or mustaches in the 20th and 21st centuries. It was very popular in the 1800s.
William Howard Taft (Republican) Lost 1912, Won 1908 Mustache
Charles Evans Hughes (Republican) Lost 1916 Mustache
Theodore Roosevelt (Progressive) Lost 1912, (Republican) Won 1904 Mustache
Grover Cleveland (Democrat) Won 1892, lost 1888, Won 1884 Mustache
Benjamin Harrison (Republican) Lost 1892, Won 1888 Beard
James G. Blaine (Republican) Lost 1884
All of the candidates in 1888 and 1884 had beards or mustaches
The following third party candidates more recently had beards or mustaches.
Howie Hawkins (Green) 2024 Beard Bob Barr (Libertarian) 2008 Mustache Andre Marrou (Libertarian) 1992 Beard Earl Browder (Communist) 1940 Mustache Roger W. Babson (Prohibition) 1940 Beard William Hope Harvey (Liberty) 1932 Mustache Herman P. Faris (Prohibition) 1924 Mustache
Neal Dow (Prohibition) was unusual in the late 1880s in that he had neither a beard, nor mustache. His home is around the corner from where I live and is open to the public for tours and info on the Prohibition movement. Portland Maine is far from being a dry town these days.

That is really interesting, thanks! A lot of men don’t look good with a beard, usually because it’s too thin, but also facial shape has some input. Weak chins can look better with a beard, strong chins look masculine and good without one.
To me he looks more masculine with a beard, so it must just be me, thanks!
The actor Kevin James can sport clean shaven, stubble, or a short beard, but if he lets it grow long, he looks like a lunatic.
I’ll take our Orange Man as we know him, please!
Two types of people don’t have beards: Women and Children.
Don’t forget obammy’s beard.
Nah, Trump said he liked it and that JD reminded him of a young Abe Lincoln.
God made that hair grow on masculine faces. It is natural.
Pic on the right: “ Say. My. Name.”
I like that look!
No, but they had make-up, and lighting. In that example, it’s more accurate to say that the characters they portrayed didn’t have beards.
Schuyler Colfax: the last VP with a beard, unless you count Charles Fairbanks who had a goatee.
I’m 57 and I’ve never been able to stand wearing facial hair much past 3 days. Stubble on the neck starts hanging up on shirt collars when I turn my neck with a lot of discomfort.
If I didn’t think I would look like a flaming weirdo I would even shave eyebrow hair.
Yes it’s how it works out
In the 1800’s, one reason why beards were more popular was that firemen’s masks didn’t have a tight fit. The facial hair served to filter the smoke.
Nowadays, firemen’s masks have a more secure fit.
I don’t know if any of our VP’s were firemen.
I LOL when Trump introduced Vance at a rally, saying “He’s a handsome son-of-a-b****, isn’t he?”
