Gov. Gavin Newsom today called newly elected state lawmakers to work as soon as they’re sworn in on Dec. 2 for a special session to “safeguard California values” as the state prepares — again — to be a liberal antagonist to the upcoming Trump administration.
In other words: Gear up for lawsuits.
In a proclamation declaring the special session, Newsom said he wants the Legislature to approve funding for the Department of Justice and other state agencies to “immediately file affirmative litigation.”
Legislative sources said the special session is intended to be narrowly focused on providing legal resources to the attorney general’s office — perhaps as much as $100 million — to fight the Trump administration. The goal is to appropriate the money before Trump is sworn in on Jan. 20, though given how many new members are joining the Legislature, they may not be ready to act until early January.

There is little they can do to “Trump-proof” California short of Session —Like the Flag states—a California Republic. With the House and Senate in GOP hands they have little power to keep Trump out of the Golden State. He plays hardball and has little love for the Pelosi Dynasty that runs the state now.

Executive Orders are going to bite Hairgel in the butt. Supreme Court said years ago that States are not entitled to Fed money if they don’t meet the qualifications to receive that money. Remember the change of the drinking age from 18 to 21? FHWA money was tied to the increased age - Don’t increase the age, then no FHWA money for you. The Fed Gov’t can place conditions on the states to receive Fed money. For instance, an EO to the US dept. of Education to not send education funds to states that allow CRT and/or DEI to be taught, those subjects harm the kid’s learning more than it helps them.
Newsom’s resources will be no match against Trump’s power and resources. Not even close.
