A 93-year-old Florida man allegedly confessed to twice trying to kill his wife of 60 years — because he “did not want to leave her alone” when he died, according to cops.
Helmut Lockner was arrested on Saturday after his wife said he crept up on her watching TV and tried to strangle her with some rope — weeks after he tried to smother her with a pillow, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
Lockner allegedly told detectives he planned to kill himself with the same rope, telling them that he “is dying and did not want to leave his wife alone,” according to an arrest report, which did not detail if the suspect had a terminal illness or was referring to his age.
His wife, who was not identified by police, said he first attempted to kill her two weeks earlier by smothering her with a pillow in bed — telling her then that “he did not want to leave her alone,” according to the arrest report.

What I get is the worry for how will my spouse, who possibly is losing her ability to care for herself, remember things, walk, understand how to pay bills, the things that perhaps he helped with, how will she get by ‘without me’.
It’s easy to see from the outside it’s wrong but when one is deeply attached to another and is a caregiver for that person it might seems like an answer, to let her ‘go with me’.
I’m not saying it’s right. But depression, anxiety, no way to solve a major problem, worrying about their spouse being alone and helpless, skewed the reasoning. I know in this case the wife was not looking to ‘go’ and maybe this doesn’t apply but I get why sometimes people make these decisions and sometimes those people do believe in God.
Out here in Az we had a local radio personality who he and his wife for years did very well. Famous, well loved, well off, but she had medical issues, they both had financial issues.
They made a pact, although he had nothing wrong with him they together committed suicide.
Phoenix was horrified. They were both beloved. He did not want to go on without her.
Their two grown children lost both parents in the span of two days.
I know no more of their personal details than that, but it is just heartbreaking on several levels.
On some level, this makes sense. Sad and wrong, but I get it.
Two of the older ladies in my church book club lost their husbands within the last two years. They refer to them as, “my Roy” and “my Bud”, and are floundering in the world now.
Vikings. More likely servent girls were killed and buried with their masters, perhaps sometimes wives. Viking women could divorce and engage in business.
Suttee. That was the term I was looking for. Thanks.
I’ll bet some former members of the British Commonwealth would love to be back under British rule. Not saying it was all wonderful, but the English established order in society and in commerce.
