Laura Suter, director of personal finance at AJ Bell, comments:
“Keir Starmer’s pre-Budget speech made it pretty clear that significant tax hikes are on the horizon – no surprises there. Labour have consistently trailed that tax hikes are needed to plug the now-infamous £22 billion black hole and to boost public spending. But what is still as clear as mud is exactly how Starmer defines ‘working people’, after backing himself into a corner to protect this group of people.
“Having set out to protect the working man, he still refused to clarify whether that includes people who earn money from investing, being landlords, own their own companies and are paid through dividends, or myriad other workers who aren’t on conventional PAYE. What’s more, while so-called ‘working people’ might be protected from tax rises in their pay packet, what about tax hits on the petrol they use in their car to get to work, the services they rely on, or the post-work drink they have down the pub?
“It’s a bit of a mixed message; he promises to protect average earners while also hinting that more tax increases might be necessary down the line, beyond this Budget. This approach could end up hitting middle-income earners if they’re swept up in the push for revenue.
“The employer National Insurance hike seems like it will be the headline change, but let’s be honest it’s unlikely to be the only one. With rising costs already challenging many businesses, a National Insurance increase could strain employers further – and there’s a good chance some of that burden will filter down to employees, which further complicates the promise to shield ‘working people’. So, while Starmer talks about stability and long-term growth, the lack of clarity leaves businesses and families bracing for potentially prolonged and widespread hikes...

UK is swirling down the toilet. Starmer is adding more water.
My retirement plan was not to have a lot of money. It was to have no debt and not need a lot of stuff, and not have to pay any income tax.
I’m retired and my current cost of living is less than half of our SS checks. We did it. But the odd part is that there is an almost tangible satisfaction and peace regarding taxes when one pays no income tax. And lives in a county with virtually no property tax. I mean, c’mon, around $300 for 32 acres, two streams, a home and large shop building. Oh, and that is PER YEAR.
The Lord has truly blessed us.
Those stabby illegals aren’t free....
Starman’s head is in the stars
He told me
“Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie”
Maybe if they'd stop boosting public spending they wouldn't have a 22 billion pound 'black hole'.
It does cost a lot of money to support the greatest military empire in the world.
Oh wait—wrong country or wrong century.
:-)
Labour is just finishing the collapse of the country, a collapse that was accelerated by the Tories.
Where’s Oliver Cromwell when you need him?
Britain was lost once the Tories jettisoned Enoch Powell.
WW I started the British blundering into oblivion.
At this point they are a de facto colony of the US.
Smarmy makes his move - likes Kamala’s idea - tax the peasants into submission, then force them to convert to Islam.
lol - I thought the same immediately. It never occurs to them. When the goal is to ‘maximize tax receipts’ so they can ‘save the world’ with ‘endless new programs to _help_ people’, it’ll ALWAYS hit the working class. It has to. It’s just stealing from Peter to pay Paul.
When will people wake up?
And if they deported all the invaders/’refugees’ out that would lower costs, too.
Our former republic doesn't have any Western European allies.
But our Deep State does.
They don’t need a Cromwell.
The UK needs a Trump.
Or Nigel.
Just or curiousity sake which country do you live, if I may ask?
Apparently he is still learning, but I doubt he ever will. No country in the world ever spent, taxed and ruled itself into prosperity. Only some dumb and ignorant politicians may think so. Invariably you get what you vote for and in the long run you will pay dearly for any ignorance.
