Barbecue goers in North Carolina were sickened with parasites after being served bear meat, a new CDC report has confirmed.
In November 2023, 10 unidentified people reported fever, swelling in their faces, and muscle aches about three weeks after the event.
All of the attendees, with the youngest being just 10 years old, reported consuming undercooked bear meat at the event.
Officials from the North Carolina Division of Public Health said that based on the patients' symptoms, they had been sickened by trichinellosis, a rare parasitic infection occurring just 15 times per year in the US.
Trichinellosis, also called trichinosis, is caused by Trichinella roundworms.
According to the Mayo Clinic, these parasites typically infect bears, cougars, walruses, foxes, wild boars, and domestic pigs.
Humans can contact trichinellosis from consuming immature forms of these worms, called larvae, which are round in raw or undercooked meat from these animals.
Over the course of several weeks, those worms grow within a person's intestines and produce more larvae that travel through the bloodstream to different parts of the body before burying themselves in muscle tissue.
Because it takes several weeks, many patients don't experience symptoms right away. According to the CDC's MMWR report released Thursday, the majority of infected patients took 21 days to start showing symptoms.
The average patient age was 17, with sickened barbecue goers ranging from 10 to 40 years old.

Never NEVER eat undercooked pork or other exotic meats. I stick to chicken, turkey, pork, beef and lamb. Know the temps needed to properly cook things, and you will rarely have a problem.
Yes, if you follow the health laws in the Torah, you will live a healthier life.
Bear is not a "bizarre animal" you simpering British twit.
Jellies Eels. Now that is a bizarre animal.
The problem is that it was undercooked.
Wild meat needs to be cooked completely or it can make you sick.
They’re eating our cats! They’re eating our dogs! They’re eating our bear!
Trichinosis
Here in Central Texas, feral hogs carry it. One hunter who caught it at my friend’s ranch (he didn’t follow the heavy neoprene glove rule) spent about 9 months recovering.
Blame the bizarre person who didn’t cook it thoroughly.
HELLO! NOT KOSHER!
The fish is a tricky one. Lobsters, shrimp, scallops, clams, oysters and crab. Are a no go. To say nothing of catfish. I can live without a lot of seafood, but shrimp, scallops, and fried oysters? It’s been years since I ate them, but especially shrimp..YUMMMM.
I think the cut line is whatever eats live things in the sea is okay, whatever eats dead things is bad. Crabs exist to eat anything on the bottom of the water, not moving things. So, people who drown and make it to the bottom, are devoured by crabs. I DON’T EAT CRAB... Catfish, are gross compared to Halibut, Cod or Salmon. Never eat that stuff.
It’s a hit-piece on North Carolina
Agreed.
It’s almost like HaShem was mandating common sense.
I once had a restaurant serve me pork that was medium rare.
I said cook it some more, please.
I have made Bear Burgers from ground bear meat, not bad but I have to say the flavor is not for everyone but then again venison is also not for everyone. I would use both in a stew anytime though.
This happened on Emergency! once.
that bites...
The brits…..conquered half the world looking for spices - won’t cook with spices…..just bland garbage.
"Lobsters, shrimp, scallops, clams, oysters and crab. Are a no go."
Can’t remember where I saw it, but there was a video of some Brit kids at some school that were asked to taste test some American food.
They all seemed to be reluctant, but were very surprised when they tried it, that they actually liked it better than Brit food.
One of the most reluctant, after he ate all of his, asked the Brit sitting next to him if he could have his to eat too. (It was biscuits and gravy, which, before they tried it, said it looked like vomit (the only gravy they know, is brown gravy)).
That is why you COOK YOUR FOOD, especially wild meat!
I have eaten plenty of bear made into summer sausage by a man I worked with. No problems.
I remember that episode. One man ate raw bear meat mixed with onions. Tartar Steak.
Mom made sure all our farm meat was Well Done.
