How many of you use a CPAP machine?

Do you like it? Tolerate it? Of the three types of machines, which do you prefer?

Are they noisy or is it like "white noise?" Caveats? Suggestions? Thanks.

Thanks for the information but, no, no one has suggested a cpap machine for me. I’m merely doing some independent research.

I have used a CPAP for 25 years and have gone camping a d traveled internationally with my CPAP. A good fitting mask helps and recently I have been using a chin strap. I too thought I couldn’t adjust to using a CPAP, but I quickly became comfortable using it every night. Saline nasal rinses or sprays help with dry nose issues if you don’t have a humidifier. CPAP has been life changing as my sleep apnea was very severe.

I LOVE it. Don’t sleep without it. I sleep like a dead person, only the CPAP keeps me from being a dead person.

Drawbacks

Took awhile to figure out the right mask.

The dry mouth is irritating, but hey, I’m asleep.

I use the AirFit™ F20 by ResMed full face mask. It’s actually over the nose and mouth area.

In 2006 I was diagnosed with Restless Leg Syndrome—really bad. They placed me on a REMStar cpap with a humidifier and it worked pretty well. I used a nasal pillow type mask which doesn’t cover my face or nose, more like an O2 line. If you put your mask on right there is little to no noise. This machine worked great and still does but my doctor wanted a new sleep study after fifteen years to see if I needed changes.

After the study I was sold an Airsense10 with a heated hose and settings changes. I went through United Medical-Lincare. It was to be $40 a month for ten months. They sent me one bill which I promptly paid and then started calling about supplies, hoses, filters etc... which they assured me insurance would pay for.

Then they stopped sending me bills period for 8 months, then I get a $400-$500 bill out of the blue tacked on with lots of goodies. I contacted them and asked why did my billing stop and where did all these other charges come from you said insurance was paying for them. Oh well our billing vendor had issues, and I said for 8 MONTHS!

I told them well boys and girls I’m going to take 8 months to pay you off since it wasn’t a priority for you to get your bills out and the monthly calls for supplies can stop, I’ll get them online.

As for the Airsense10 my wife and I don’t think it is nearly as good a machine as the old Remstar. I never snored with the Remstar and do from time to time with the Airsense, using the exact same mask.

I’ve used one for maybe 15 years. Just last night I finally had electricity again to be able to use it after being w/o for a week. Yesterday morning, I woke up from a bad night’s sleep wheezing and feeling terrible. Today, my experience was totally different and I’m sure it’s because of using the CPAP machine. I still “hate” it but I won’t be w/o unless there is no way to operate it.
I’ve traced strokes, maybe caused by sleep apnea in my family back to the mid 1800’s. I am so thankful for my machine no matter how inconvenient.
Now, to clean up some more of this mess from Helene.

I’ve used a basic CPAP for around 12 years now, had a Phillips System One for the first 10. The System One never shed insulation (which is why they were recalled) and still worked well when I stopped using it - it was a little noisy is all. The recall and replacement process was dragging on and on so I bought a Respironics AirSense 10 out of pocket on the CPAP Shop website. This machine is whisper quiet and has worked well. I use a Swift headgear with nasal pillows - can’t seem to adapt to the new Respironics headgear style. It took me a little while to find the right mask and get used to the hose, but now I couldn’t sleep without it. Ironically I finally got a replacement machine from the recall (Phillips DreamStation) so I have a new backup in case the AirSense fails.
