The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has spent more than $600 million of available funds to serve noncitizen migrants in fiscal year 2024, and now, according to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the agency doesn’t have enough funding left over to make it through the rest of the hurricane season.
“The agency is being stretched as it works with states to assess damage from Hurricane Helene and delivers meals, water, generators and other critical supplies,” the Associated Press reported.
Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida last Thursday, then plowed through Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee and Virginia, flooding towns and killing more than 160 people.
More than 150,000 households have registered for assistance with FEMA, and that number is expected to rise rapidly in the coming days, said Frank Matranga, an agency representative.
The devastation was especially severe in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where at least 57 people died in and around Asheville, North Carolina, a tourism haven known for its art galleries, breweries and outdoor activities.
“Communities were wiped off the map,” North Carolina’s governor, Roy Cooper, said at a news conference Tuesday.
“We are meeting the immediate needs with the money that we have. We are expecting another hurricane hitting,” Mayorkas said. “FEMA does not have the funds to make it through the season.”
Mayorkas made his comments as Joe Biden and Kamala Harris traveled to the Southeast for photo ops amid the devastation left in the storm’s wake.
Harris visited Augusta, Georgia, one of the cities hit hardest by Hurricane, two days after Trump, along with Christian evangelist Franklin Graham’s relief organization Samaritan’s Purse, surveyed the damage in Valdosta, Georgia, and passed out truckloads of supplies. During her stop, Harris announced that FEMA would provide whopping $750 in relief funds for people who have immediate needs.
As of April, more than $174 billion in American tax dollars have been appropriated to assist Ukraine. A total of $640.9 million has been spent to feed, clothe and house noncitizens.
Congress recently provided $20 billion in funding to FEMA’s disaster relief fund as part of a short-term government spending bill to fund the government through Dec. 20, according to the AP. The bill reportedly “gave FEMA flexibility to draw on the money more quickly as needed.”
Mayorkas claimed Wednesday that FEMA has been able to meet the immediate needs of Americans in communities devastated by the hurricane, however according to multiple reports, the federal government has offered little to no help.
According to independent journalist Breanna Morello, the Biden-Harris regime and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (D) are refusing to deploy search and rescue teams to help Americans trapped after Hurricane Helene.
These teams have been in the area since Sunday, but have not been granted authorization to rescue anyone.
“They’re waiting to get authorization through Title 10,” Morello reported on X Wednesday.
Title 10 of the United States Code covers roles, missions, and organization of the United States Armed Forces, and establishes the legal basis for the Department of Defense.
“For some reason that’s not coming down,” she said.
It wouldn’t surprise me in the least bit if the numbers go much higher. The videos I’ve seen are just catastrophic. Cars are embedded in river and creek beds as well as being buried in muck elsewhere. Those vehicles were in somebody’s driveway or parking lot. I saw a news clip this morning and the death toll was closing in on 200..
This seems to have been the story with our government all along. They don’t have the money for some things, but the real problem has been how they have been spending the money on the wrong things. This was going on before before the illegal migrants even came along, although we did have more money for other things then.
I know some FEMA employees. I think they are well paid.
WRONG samaritans Purse was with Trump in Geroga on Monday.
Releasing them is the problem, whether they board a flight or not. Putting them on a flight is likely to be more dangerous and irresponsible.
yes agree, they have so much money it’s easy to waste 20% of it.
Thanks for correction
Not meaning to use your screen name, but can’t find a better way. Mayorkas has no brain and no dingdong. It just fits.
No problem FRiend..
