***So every time she has sex, the Queen bee lays some eggs in a hive cell? Then she has sex again, lays more eggs in a hive cell, and repeats this 17-20 times in an afternoon?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I think that she only “gets busy” >ahem< once like this in her life. During her initial flight, she will mate with 10-12 male drones.
No picnic for them either, as they lose their reproductive organs in the process, dying in the process.
She uses what she has stored up over the next 3-5 years and lays eggs.
You are the bee expert, thanks!
Ahhh. Got it. Thank you, Porkchop. That’s a much more reasonable sequence of events. Mating becomes a terminal condition for the poor drones, which leaves me wondering where their detached reproductive organs end up. Not a good way to go I imagine, but maybe slightly better than having your head bitten off by a Black Widow. Another research project after I retire - learn more about bees.
