Battle of Lepanto 1571
The Battle of Lepanto took place on October 7, 1571, when a galley fleet of the Holy League, a coalition of Christian states, decisively defeated the main fleet of Ottoman war galleys. The Holy League consisted of the Republic of Venice, the Papacy (under Pope Pius V), Spain (including Naples, Sicily, and Sardinia), the Republic of Genoa, the Duchy of Savoy, the Knights Hospitaller, and the Habsburgs.

Key Events

The battle occurred off the coast of Lepanto, Greece, during an Ottoman campaign to acquire the Venetian island of Cyprus.
The Christian fleet, led by Juan de Austria, engaged the Ottoman fleet, which was significantly larger, with over 250 galleys and 100,000 sailors and soldiers.
After four hours of intense fighting, the Christians emerged victorious, capturing 117 Ottoman galleys and thousands of men.
