If you are in an area that may suffer water damage, I recently read of a good idea. Remove the racks from your dishwasher to make more room, and use it to store important papers, photos, laptop, etc. Items that may not do well in a wet environment.

I had heard about the dishwasher trick, but others said that firstly, the dishwasher isn’t really waterproof. It’s designed to keep water in, but if it’s immersed, it won’t hold the water out. Also, any backwash through the drainage system will potentially rise up on the dishwasher.
