I've noticed same. I wonder if there are psychological studies on this. It seems contradictory; people who do not want, and often can not handle, responsibility over other things and creatures, nonetheless seem to willingly take it on (and yet do it badly) - in the form of animals.
Too smart to be special needs, too dumb for the real world.
