UPDATE: HIV Stigma Is on the Decline, GLAAD Reports. But Is That True?
POZ ^ | September 23, 2024 | Trent Straube

September 13, 2024: Is HIV stigma finally decreasing in the United States? More Americans believe so, found the 2024 State of HIV Stigma report. “For the first time in five years, [the report] found a statistically significant decline of HIV stigma in the U.S., with 85% of Americans saying they believe HIV stigma exists, down from 89% in 2020,” according to a press release from LGBTQ media advocacy group GLAAD, which spearheaded the annual report in partnership with pharma giant Gilead Sciences’ Gilead COMPASS Initiative.

Troublingly, though, is the finding that fewer people believe everyone should get tested for HIV (67% of respondents compared with 77% in 2020). The fifth annual report also found that Gen Z—roughly those between ages 27 and 11—is the least HIV-educated generation. Perhaps a solution to these challenges lies in another report finding. As the authors state: “Seeing more stories of people living withHIV in media is key to combating HIV stigma.”

Anyone trying to "combat stigma" is simply and enemy of thinking people. Stigma is self-existent and has its own rational reason for being.

HIV/AIDS deserves all the stigma that it deserves. No one who holds that stigma needs to justify their opinion or needs to be "educated."

85%, down from 89%, is still considerable. Given that it’s an incurable venereal disease, perhaps a little caution is in order.

Incurable, potentially deadly if not treated, and definitely life-shortening.

What’s to fear?

People now hide their opinions and utter in public politically correct rants. However very few of those “tolerant, empathetic” people would knowingly invite someone with HIV into their home and sit their dinner table.

Lately there have been drug ads on FNC (maybe also on other channels) aimed at men with HIV who want to continue promiscuous sex. It seems like the target audience would be pretty small but the drug companies think it’s worth spending the money advertising.

It doesn't become less deadly simply because it is in conditional remission.

Even "undetectable" the virus works behind the scenes wearing out the body. This is documented.

And the "undetectable" narrative is pure bunk and propaganda. That is NOT a durable, static condition. A carrier can quickly become "detectable" if he is inconsistent with his medication schedule or the virus becomes drug-resistant, a common occurrence. What's so insidious is that this change to detectable isn't known until his next quarterly or bi-yearly checkup. By that time, perhaps hundreds of other fags may have been exposed to his disease.

There are pestilences that tend to run among specific people groups.

These pestilences don’t really care about stigma.

I agree.

I imagine that the stigma attached to leprosy 100 years ago was equally well deserved.
I also imagine that if those reporting this story were offered an opportunity to exchange
bodily fluids with a person with active HIV, they would quickly decline.

Do they mean the sort of stigma that manifests itself in an unwillingness to hook up?

Yep.

This is a big "problem" on queer "dating" sites and queer bars, and has been roundly condemned while trying not to shame the ones who want to be careful. Descriptions of advertising dates as "safe" and "clean" do not go over well for the infected, especially when it is accompanied by "you be, too." Trepidation in getting involved with someone who is infected but claims to be "safe" is condemned as stigma.

Another point of contention is the PrEP issue. Those on PrEP (to prevent HIV infection in themselves) are often referred to as "Truvada whores," suggesting that they can have all the promiscuous bareback "sex" they want without worrying about contracting AIDS.

Those are dilemmas I'll get my popcorn out to watch.

HIV Stigma Is on the Decline, GLAAD Reports. But Is That True?

Not surprising. Rather than stats such as,

in 2019, male fornication with men (sodomy) was responsible for 81% of new HIV cases among men:

the excerpts for top results in ( even in DuckDuckGo (DDG) for "Negative effects of homosexual relations" (without quotes) do not include STDs/STI's but excerpts designed to portray the practitioners as victims, and or focuses on homosexual unions. Google only provides one (#9) excerpt result on STDs out of 30, while Bing also shows just one out of 30, but presently (surprisingly) at the top. (Note that, unlike DDG, Google and Bing limit results to 10 per page, no longer allowing more.)
