Exactly.

Somehow the corporations pawned duties off on the consumer for free. And we pay for it with our time sans compensation. Grounds for lawsuit if you ask me. Truly forgetting to scan something is their fault for foisting these stupid cashierless checkouts on their customers.

And the sheeple just take it in stride.

Stories like this remind me of our local Costco, which went through the trouble and cost during COVID to remodel the store to install express self-checkout lanes.

Maybe a year after that, you couldn't grab the hand scanner in those lanes without a Costco employee brow-beating you over such an action.

Personally, I like using self-checkout when I don't have a lot of items. It gives me a chance to double-check the cost of items since stores have become lax in posting prices (maybe because prices have been increasing rapidly in recent years).

Funny thing, I have made zero scanning mistakes using Costco's self-checkout (when allowed or I get there first) in the 3+ years of doing do. Conversely, I have found mistakes on two separate check-outs that were done by Costco employees.

I know a banker who this happened to.
Very outstanding respected individual.
There was a ligitimate change in his medications.
And the man caught him on camera skipping items.
Banker doesn’t even remember doing it.
Court expunged his record.
Bank put him on leave and then let him retire.

Of course, if you’re all weed weed up and on crack or meth and you try to lift asparagus and ham,, well real world consequences.

The pot yeah

But folks don’t take zofran for a buzz

It’s the new phenegran

Staved off nausea

Here in Music City shoplifting is on par or not worse than simple possession of two THC vape pens

And even if you’re lucky enough to get a cashier, you still end up bagging the groceries yourself.

My reaction, exactly. $67 bucks is not a whoops, it’s shoplifting.

was arrested on March 28 in Indiana for theft, possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance.

The title is misleading. She was stopped for failing to scan the grocery items but was arrested when they found drugs in her purse. Then the charges were dropped. It seems like the police did not overreact here. My bet is that if she just failed to scan the items, they would have told her to pay for them and let her go. Her life seems to be "destroyed" as a result of a personal downward spiral, not one incident.

Don’t know how they do things back east but in Colorado the scanners beep to let you know an item was read.

It wasn’t just asparagus and ham, it was

$67 worth of items, including asparagus and ham, had not been scanned

That’s not just a “forgot to scan” issue.

Never use the self-checkout.

After this big technology push of the last 10 years and installation of self-checkouts, I have read articles that Walmarts and supermarkets in some urban areas are removing them.

The temptation to "forget" to scan $67 worth of items is too great and occurs too frequently, to the point they are losing big money to theft in some stores.

Yep, for the reason you said. Plus there are people in our society who - for whatever reason - can find no better work than checkout clerk. Better that they put in a day’s work than sit at home collecting welfare.

To give them employment, I’ll gladly pay a few cents more per item.
