$67 raises doubts, unless it was a tube of lipstick or a 1 oz. jar of anti-wrinkle cream.

While being watched by a Walmart security camera, I had to press a button to get a store employee to unlock a cabinet, so I could get some gym socks, which the store employee then took to the front and handed off to another employee, who then took the socks to a self-checkout register and scanned the socks herself and put them in a bag. She stood there while I scanned my credit card. I had to show the receipt to another employee on the way out of the store.

I doubt I’d have any such hassle if I were buying a necktie.

Yeah. Just to buy ham you have to go into hock.

I also notice many times that the clerk that is supposed to be watching over the self-check out line, my Ralphs has eight self check-out registers, is off somewhere else, distracted talking to someone or helping at one of the registers - making theft even easier. Targets in So Cal now have a 10 item limit for self-checkout due to rampant theft, the local Whole Foods only allows only hand-carried carts in for self-checkout, no carts allowed.

I’m assuming she was stealing. However, I make it a point when using these self-checkout aisles to make sure an employee comes over to “help” me so that there are no misunderstandings.

possession of marijuana

Well, that explains why she forgot about the asparagus and ham. I'll bet she had some Oreos and Doritos in the buggy.

“ If you forget to scan it... It’s theft, pure and simple.”
Forgive me if Ive missed a few items during scanning. My unpaid employee training was somewhat incomplete! /S

Hey, a prestigious job doesn’t necessarily pay well. Buying drugs and food can strain the budget. Besudes, she did scan the four bags of Doritos, four boxes of Hostess cupcakes, two pecan pies, and a gallon of ice cream.

Digging deeper into the article, there is a bit more which may have led to her termination. But hey, I guess it is common for someone with prescription medication to hand it to someone else and ask them to look after it.

It was during the arrest and subsequent search of Pettipiece that police uncovered the vapes and nausea medication.
'It was so ridiculous,' Pettipiece said, adding that she didn't realize the self-checkout scanner hadn't read some of the items.
The former athlete added that the vapes did not contain nicotine or THC, and the pills were a prescription belonging to an assistant coach who asked her to look after them when they headed to a softball game.
'We both forgot about them,' she said.

Yes, asparagus and ham, $67 worth. Oh, and don’t we all carry our “friend’s” prescription drugs for them?

Well, I tend to use the self-checkout every time, but I usually check & recheck each item as it comes up on the screen. Haven’t had many problems.

Too bad she wasn’t in California where it’s A-OK to steal $950 worth of merchandise each day and no one will do a thing about it...

Unless you're white, have no criminal record, have a job, ...

Rest of the story:

“Pettipiece was charged March 28 in Porter County, Ind., for theft, possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance after an incident at a WalMart self-checkout.”

The DM article is horrible, from the headline to the content. She didn’t ‘lose’ her job: She resigned, but one would have to read all the way through that tripe to grasp that and the fact that she had someone else’s prescription and 2 marijuana vapes in her purse, which is still illegal in Porter County, IN.

She’s a canadian wokester. A dunce. Superspreader of the true pandemic.

But I won’t argue with the fact that it should be mandatory to post signage - at a minimum a screen for which the customer must “agree” - warning customers that they may be prosecuted for theft if they fail to scan items at self-checkout. Only the dishonest and utterly stupid wouldn’t notice an item not scanning and/or ask for help.

Such signage would help compel stores to maintain human checkers for those of us who prefer to manage liability than be subject to it.

So far, the Walmart near me doesn’t have too many items under lock. Once I was asked to produce my card before I scanned. Otherwise, I get in and out pretty quick.

If the customer makes a mistake, they call the cops. If an employee makes a mistake, nothing happens.

Another reason why I don’t use self checkout.

While many are focusing on the self-checkout incident, the bigger issue here is the drug-related charges. Meaggan Pettipiece wasn’t just dealing with a checkout mistake; she was also charged with possession of marijuana and a controlled substance, which likely contributed to the downward spiral of her life. Even though the charges were dropped, the damage to her career and reputation had already been done.

For me I do not use self-checkout for this reason.

The crime here is that ham and asparagus costs $67.00.

You can usually tell by someone’s demeanor whether it was an error or they actually forgot to scan items. Also, if you frequent a specific grocery store often, the check-out clerks usually know you and know whether you are the type to cheat at the check-out.

I’ve used the same Kroger for years and am on a first-name basis with the self check-out attendants. I once forgot to scan my deli items and didn’t realize it until I got to the car. I put my other groceries into the car, and then returned to the store and informed Carolyn (sweet lady) of what I had done. She quickly scanned them at her register and sent me on my way.
