IMHO it’s because evangelicals and 2nd amendment supporters tend to think in terms of relying on God or self, but not relying on government. People who have a worldview of depending on government are more apt to be involved in making sure that government does what they want.
It seems to me they’d think in terms of what government might DO to them.
