Yep - I dumped a doctor after he wanted to put me on statins even though my cholesterol was at perfect levels - because “it was recommended for men over 55”...I told him I needed a more convincing/compelling argument to put unneeded poison in my body.
I remind such folks that the preface of every statistics book warns that statistics should not be applied to individuals.
Docs will study statistics and probabilities such as:
-Untreated condition X results in 4 out of 10 fatalities.
-But with treatment Y, there are 1 out of 10 fatalities.
-But treatment Y also has side effects with 1 out of 10 fatalities.
-Ergo, a net minus 2 out of 10 fatalities means treat Condition X with Y.
Note there is no accounting for an individual above.
So if you line up 10 people, a doc would not be able to identify who among them would be the ones to die untreated vs treated vs side effect.
That’s why it should always remain an individual decision.
