Democrats were once the party of free speech.
The ACLU and “truth to power” were part of the Democrat party truth brigade. Yet now Democrats and the left are stifling free speech so fast it would make George Orwell’s head spin.
If Orwell was alive today, his sequel to 1984 would be 2024, replacing Winston Smith with Elon Musk or Telegram CEO Pavel Durov.
Censorship, once popular in communist China, Hitler’s Germany, and Mao’s China, is the new Converse sneakers, mom jeans, and cardigans, popular decades ago and now making a comeback.
Brazil and the U.K. are leading the censorship charge, with the U.S.A. close behind.
Speech is now free only if it is the right speech, politically correct, and not critical of the ruling class or its policies. Let’s make Orwell’s Oceana and Big Brother great again.
Aside from challenging the “safe and effective” COVID vaccine mantra, election integrity is another hot area of censorship. Challenge the ruling class and be castigated as a vaccine or election “denier.”
Physicians lost their jobs, licenses, board certifications, and reputations for having the audacity to question or challenge the government narrative regarding COVID. Daring to question election integrity leads to the same scorn from the smart set in Washington D.C. and the media, leading to disbarment or worse.
There is a website dedicated to these evil election deniers called electiondeniers.org. This is a project of States United Action, a nonprofit “democracy center” that apparently believe in a situational and conditional First Amendment.

The ACLU gave up that pretense a long time ago. They still occasionally take something and make it an issue when it is a real freedom of speech thing, but they have been simply practicing Leftist advocacy for decades.

It took almost 200 years before the Democrats allowed Negroes to practice their civil rights.
When I was in high school back in the 1970s, there were left-leaning “smart kids” wearing the “Question Authority” buttons. They were free speech advocates then. Today, they probably label any free speech they disagree with as “misinformation.”

The Free Speech movement began at Berkeley with student protests in 1964-65. Their basic demand was that communist teachers are protected by the First Amendment. Now that communists are in power, free speech is what they say it is.
Not at all, they have always tightly controlled speech to make everything variations of liberalism, people who remember the beginning of PBS saw that and were disappointed in the 60s to learn that the govt. station started by the democrats was going to be so controlled.
A conservative Ted Turner rejected as the buyer for CBS, libraries with their annual box of “censored books” but if you suggested other books the left didn’t like, the library would not accept them, the Fairness Doctrine was a perfect example, free speech law that yet again kept out challenges to the left.
When the Left no longer could control the narrative, they no longer were in favor of free speech.
Now the Left's vision of "free speech" is: Your speech is violence. My violence is speech.
Then child killing came and they cannot stand the truth.
You cannot be rabid feminist and pro-life. Not the wsy God made woman.
This works because the democrat party has nurtured two main constituencies, the lower IQ ignorant and the young. One cannot reason why something is wrong and the other has no historic reference to know why something is wrong.
This is not hypocrisy, it’s a game plan.
