What are good 0.177 Caliber Air Rifle Pellets

I have a Gamo 1000 fps .177 caliber air rifle that I am using to teach my grandson to shoot.

I bought Daisy pellets for ammo and I think that they are a bad batch because I can't get a consistent grouping.

I am at best 12 inch groups at 20 yards.

I am looking for recommendations for good quality pellets.

Are you using a scope?

I have seen this sort of grouping when scope mounts are even a little loose.

It does not happen as much with iron sights, but a loose sight could also cause the problem.

If you have a scope mounted on the rifle, check to see if the mounts are tight.

Since they all come from the same die, they will all shoot the same. It enables you to really dial in the sights or scope. Assuming you’re shooting a gun that has very controlled air pressure like single pumps.

Eley pellets (UK) - best in the world. getting groups the size of a postage stamp or less at 10 meters with our Feinwerkbau 900 iron sighted match rifle.

Try some H&N, JSB or RWS ("Diana") brand pellets, which generally have better QC and are thus more consistent; the fly in that ointment is that there are many weights and styles of all three, and that airgun may be fussy. You could try an H&N "sampler pack" which you can get through Amazon or Pyramid Air. Airgun Depot sells RWS sampler packs. Out of , say, ten types, you will be able to determine the best as your baseline pellet, and then proceed from there as needed.

My pet springer groups flat-nosed H&N Match Rifle pellets the best, but it will handle many other "field" pellets acceptably. My experiences with Crosman and Daisy pellets have generally been disappointing.

.177 airguns are like .22 rimfires in that they are often fussy about what you use, and airguns in general require greater consistency in hold and even loading procedures (such as whether or not a pellet seater of some sort is used, depth of pellet insertion, etc). I can waste the best pellets in the world if I don't hold and follow through consistently.

Crosman Premiers are actually very decent and not expensive. I’ve found Daisy pellets to be garbage. High powered break barrel air rifles are not the easiest to shoot accurately. Do a search for artillery hold.

Can you lock the gun in a vice and shoot repeated shots through it?

I should have added almost all guns are sensitive to pellet weight. By an assortment of weights to find what your gun likes.

Is this a break barrel and are you using a scope or the iron sights? The iron sights are mounted on the barrel and should shoot consistently. If you mount a scope it’s not fixed to the barrel and every time you lever the barrel, you can wind up with a different aim point with respect to the scope.

I've tried 10 or so different types from different manufacturers. Gamo .177 Rocket is the best all around. I have 1450 fps Gamo

You should have spent $30 on a daisy red rider bb gun. A better first rifle for a boy, Lots more fun, cheaper and easier to load and shoot than a gamo.. And it will hit a soda can at 10 meters 100/100 times.

I have one I shoot nuisance rabbits with. I took the scope off and use the iron sights and it can put a rabbit down easy at 20 yards.

Pellet rifles are ‘sensitive’.

I would guess the large group size is due to shooting technique.

Should shrink with ‘proper’ (whatever that is) technique.

Then should shrink from that with the pellet it likes.

A spring-powered airgun that will fire a pellet 1000 fps is going to have a lot of "snap" to it (springs and pistons and laws of physics make it so), and a vise or locking rest is generally counterproductive. I found that most springers shoot best for me with an "artillery hold," which info on is all over YouTube, etc.

If you learn to shoot a springer well, you will be able to shoot just about ANYTHING well.
