"Shark Tank" star Kevin O'Leary isn't known to mince words, and his take on workers splurging on their daily cups of coffee and work lunches was no exception.

"Stop buying coffee for $5.50. You got to work and spend $15 on a sandwich – what are you, an idiot?" O'Leary, also known as Mr. Wonderful, said in a financial advice clip shared on Instagram last week.

I buy Folgers Instant, also at Costco. The 16oz jar typically runs $8.49 to $9.99. I’m not sure exactly how many cups I get out of it (not as many as advertised as I use a spoonful larger than the rounded teaspoon recommended), but it’s probably at least 50, so we’re talking about 0.17 to 0.20 per cup, maximum, and probably lower than that. And the truth is that I actually like Folgers Instant as much more than any brewed coffee.

It’s not healthy, and they, parents and peers have trained every child to by expensive sugary slop ‘coffees’ every day. Candy and ice cream taste good too, but do we really need more obese diabetic children and adults? Oh wait we have pharmaceuticals for that (shakes head in disgust) so not only are children trained to enrich socialist ‘coffee’ companies we produce more clients for the pharmaceutical companies.

Americans have become a nation of live for today and not worry about the future because, hey...that’s what big government is for.....right?

I don’t buy it except on very rare occasion. Last two packs I bought were for a church tent meeting for a traveling evangelist.

Yeah, I have to admit getting the bottles is convenient. I do it myself for meetings of a group I'm in charge of. I guess I wasn't posting as much about the retail cost as the markup, and the fact that something that includes a plastic bottle and cap can wholesale for a penny.

You can buy an espresso machine for $350.
Then you can make that $5.50 cup at home for about 20 cents . Bring one to work .

Thank you! I would have researched more before I did it, so thanks for saving me that time!! What I found and posted sounded like WAY too much salt. And not enough coffee?

I guess it not only reduces the bitterness, but also brings out the better flavors.

It sounded like a whole lot but the new numbers seem easy to try, I tried a tiny sprinkle in my 4 cup maker this morning but with no real impressions to report, but it seems like a harmless thing to experiment with.

Yep. The big coffee stores certainly don’t make coffee that is 20x better tasting - but that is what you’re paying.

Read a good article that for every $1 you invest in your 20s, you should expect it to be worth $88-100 by the time you retire.

My grandfather had lunch once a week with people he had known all his life. One of them was a multi-millionaire lawyer and he was always the one who calculated what everyone owed. He did donate enough for a local university to name a building after him.

For me, the problem was
always running out of
filters, and drip coffee
makers that died an early
death. The top of my fridge
sports 6 caraffes. Never
could get one to last more
than a year, and I’ve bought
from dirt cheap to high
dollar units.
The old percolator type I
use now, is always ready to
go, makes consistant tasting
coffee.
I’ve even perked coffee when
the power’s been out. The BBQ
works great for brewing a
pot.

I don’t understand the point of this. Are you going to show up at the office of these five dollar coffee people with your percolator and a grill?

My grown son is friends with an Arab family who live next door to him in Haifa (ethnic troubles are unheard of in Haifa). They brew the best damned coffee in creation, served in tiny cups, and invite him to partake when he stops in, but they’re not showing up at this office, either.

Yes, there are great ways of making coffee, and I hope you enjoy yours. But coffee should never cost five dollars, when a simple jar of Red Mug, a pinch of Hal and some hot water will do, with milk or creamer an option. It’s one thing to be pampered. Overpaid millennials will pamper themselves. It’s another to waste money on overrated crap coffee from Starbucks or wherever, like they’re doing.

Don’t understand your
reaction as we seem to be
on the same page.
I tried Starbucks once, and
only once. Their coffee to me
tasted of burnt beans.
My post is merely pointing
out that getting bsck to
or sticking with the basics
results in coffee that is
brewed as it was ment to be.
I’ll stick to my primative
ways.

Depends on the type and level of job. For many professionals, getting the change of scenery and break of a nice lunch out with colleagues can more than pay for itself in overall performance and position with their employer.

All I’m saying is, that’s good for you. But not practicable in the office of Shark Tank, which is filled up with stupid millennials with pieces of paper that claim they’re brilliant. They have to be weaned off of Starbucks in favor of something cheap and easy to make, without hurting their ickle feewings. Same goes for the $24 sandwiches.
