Hurricane forecasters are bewitched, bothered, and bewildered. The Atlantic hurricane season was supposed to be epic. Instead, it's turned into a real dud.
Huge storms wreaking havoc on coastlines from Aruba to Long Island were supposed to line up in the Eastern Atlantic in June and hit us one at a time until late September. The damage was going to be historic and the TV coverage was going to give climate change fanatics plenty of air time to vent that "this is just a foretaste" of what's to come.
But something puzzling occurred on the way to hurricane Armageddon: not much has happened. The Atlantic Ocean has seen five named storms: two tropical storms, two hurricanes and one major hurricane this season.

I’m 70+. Been looking at weather reports for 50+ of those years. What I see...
Forecasting has improved somewhat. Back in the younger days a forecast may have been good for 24 to 48 hours. Given the turbulent nature of atmosphere I didn’t think that was too bad.
Fast forward to 2010 or so. I used to stay at work for a week so I would take a look at forecasts to see what to pack for the week. I could look on Monday and get a reasonable idea of what Friday would look like. Sure, the forecast could shift 12 or so hours across the week, meaning the rain / snow could get there Thursday night or Friday evening, but I could reasonably depend on the forecast.
That’s a Major Improvement over the sixties or seventies. I don’t beat on the weather guys too bad.
Climate is what you expect. Weather is what you get.
I’m going to Florida in October.
Then you’ll know where the hurricanes are.

What, in your opinion, defines “significant” related to a tropical storm system?
Uh, death.
Do you require a minimum number of deaths for your definition of a significant storm? 1, 100, 1000? Humans, animals? Interesting that economic costs don’t factor into your definition, Crusty. Lots of oil and gas platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.
