Kamala Harris’s razor-sharp debate skills have powered her political ascent. Her success next week will turn on how well she adapts to an unpredictable rival.
Few of the people gathered in the San Francisco church knew quite what to expect from Kamala Harris.
It was 2003, and the two men she faced in her first political campaign were well-known brawlers locked in a rematch to become the city’s district attorney — one of whom was her former boss.
Ms. Harris was a little-known government lawyer who had landed in the local gossip pages for dating Willie Brown, one of the state’s most powerful politicians. The attack on her was obvious: political patronage, packaged with a whiff of sexual intrigue.
After an audience member asked about her ties to Mr. Brown, she rose from her seat at the front of the sanctuary as her two opponents, Bill Fazio and Terence Hallinan, looked on.
Ms. Harris walked behind Mr. Fazio, asking if the audience remembered how Mr. Hallinan had attacked him for being caught in a massage parlor in a 1998 raid. She walked behind Mr. Hallinan, asking if the audience remembered how Mr. Fazio had attacked him for being a “deadbeat dad” who failed to pay child support.
As faint gasps echoed across the room, Ms. Harris wrapped her punch in a gauzy pledge. Unlike her opponents, she promised that she would run a campaign based on the issues, not on negative attacks.
The crowd jumped to its feet in a standing ovation, recounted Jim Stearns, a political consultant who had helped Ms. Harris in the race.

ny SLIMES what a surprise, razor-sharp debate skills HAHAHAHAHA ya sure she does
/waxing poetic
She cackles when she knows she’s in over her head, which is all the time.
You just know she'll want to shout something out at him. They need to frisk her before starting to make sure she isn't carrying a concealed bullhorn. /s
wow if they gotta play up the debate as Trump is an unpredictable rival and they aren’t sure how well she will do, what they heck confidence does that give for her ability in dealing with leaders of countries that don’t like us?
Should have ran with Mayor Pete. But there was no way Joe was going to pick him as the VP. Kamala was perfect for the job.
Trump needs to have an ad of that montage of kaMAla telling PENCE, “I’m speaking”, over and over. That head wag, and smug look ... He face is supremely smashable.
From what I heard, she spread something else.
You made me laugh against my will.

Kamala Harris’s razor-sharp debate skills have powered her political ascent.
she called biden a racist
Razor Sharp, huh. She was pretty ‘razor sharp’ in responding to Tulsi Gabbard’s attacks. You can be a fake girl-moment joy pig - or you can an attack, in her case a Shih Tzu.
Kamala was more or less able to play the role of a CA senator but she doesn’t have the chops to wrangle with tough world leaders.
That wasn't a debate, that was a confirmation hearing where the nominee must be on his best behavior and the Senators are usually at their worst behavior.
The deck is always stacked against anyone who appears before a Congressional committee, and the members of Congress sitting at the raised dais can wield tremendous optics of power even when the nominee still passes the confirmation process.
A debate is a contest of equals, which is an entirely different matter. Harris was able to score points against Pence because of his soft non-confrontational nature, but Trump will be a beast if she tries that on him. The LAAP-dog media have already written the man-abuses-woman narrative framing stories, now they just have to fill in the blanks of what actually transpires.

She’s a no-trick pony.
Yes indeed. Both sides are adapting old songs to fit this election. Dems have changed “Reunited and it feels so good” to “Re-indicted and it feels so good.”
yes i know it was a hearing, but it displayed DA-type tactics which she executed well. she may be rusty on this approach but if revived, it can be powerful. she also likes to tell a story with a zinger at the end a la calling Joe a ‘racist.” so hope DJT is expecting this kind of “incoming.” these are her types of power punches, that start slow and have dramatic endings to influence. we’ll see what she uses to dodge giving word-salad-y responses. she’ll memoriize her punches, then drop in judiciously, no matter the question. we’ll see how he counteracts. she is not the pushover people expect - if she doesn’t get rattled.
