Newsom vetoes controversial bill that would have given housing loans to illegal immigrants

FIRST ON FOX: California Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a controversial bill that would have given hundreds of thousands of dollars in housing loans to illegal immigrants.

Last month, the California legislature advanced AB 1840, known as the "California Dream for All" loan program, which would have given illegal immigrants up to $150,000 in first-time homeownership loans — a bill that if signed into law would have given first-time homebuyers up to 20% of a home's value or up to $150,000 as down payment assistance.

"This bill seeks to prohibit the disqualification of applicants from one of California Housing Finance Agency's (CalHFA) home purchase assistance programs based solely on their immigration status. Given the finite funding available for CalHFA programs, expanding program eligibility must be carefully considered within the broader context of the annual state budget to ensure we manage our resources effectively," Newsom said in the veto letter.

"For this reason, I am unable to sign this bill."

However, Democratic lawmakers in the state have defended the legislation, arguing that it is simply designed to give illegal immigrants the same benefits afforded to everyone else in the state.

"It isn’t given out willy nilly to just anybody," Democratic Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes said during a June hearing on the bill.

Newsom knows signing this bill would have killed his chances for 2028 Pres. run.

Oh, I didn't know that LEGAL IMMIGRANTS and US CITIZENS residing in CA already get 150K to buy a home. Learn something every day.

Yep, this can be something he would point to, as showing he’s not a knee jerk liberal.

Signing the bill would have been political suicide, imo.

Yep, moving away by increments from his far-left essence in view of 2028. Re-inventing himself as a “reasonable liberal”.
Phoney baloney.

Oh, yes, you know Gavin ached to sign such a one sided bill.
The opposition must have been very strong. Auntie Nancy probably told him to ‘Just do it after The Election, that’s only a few weeks away. Un-Veto it. Don’t give the GOP another hot issue on us!”

I kept hearing they were giving money. Now it’s stated as it would have been a loan. Glad it was vetoed because most people would not have paid it back.

Don’t the DEMs have a super majority in CA and could override the veto?

Another example that any vote for any Democrat anywhere anytime is a vote to destroy the American nation.Rational, decent, hard working people are absolutely right to resent and even be outraged to pay the taxes to support this and so much other Democrat imposed nonsense.

Thank you for referencing that article Signalman.

"Newsom vetoes controversial bill that would have given housing loans to illegal immigrants"

Newsom probably got caught with using oppressed taxpayer federal dollars to try to give Medicare to undocumented Democrats, probably to try to win their illegal votes to help keep elite desperate Democrats in power imo, and is therefore being careful.

California Forced To Repay Millions After Giving Taxpayer-Funded Healthcare To ‘Noncitizens' (6.5.24)

The smoking gun link above, evidence of post-17th Amendment ratification Congress's ongoing abuse of its 16th Amendment powers (direct taxes) imo, was Newsom's project imo.

Since Congress and renegade states have repeatedly proven that they are an enemy of the people imo, it is now up to Democratic and Republican Trump supporters to effectively "impeach and remove" ALL (exceptions?) state and federal lawmakers and executives in November.

In fact, it's up to us Trump supporters to take the first MAJOR step in draining the swamp by supporting Trump 47 with a new, Constitution-respecting Congress, new state lawmakers too, not only so that he will not be a lame duck president from the first day of his second term, but will support him to quickly finish draining the swamp.

Finally, let's not allow the anti-Trump media try to fade our memories of what we witnessed on July 13.

It passed the Assembly by supermajority and just a vote or two short of that in the Senate. However the legislature is adjourned for the year eff 8/31/24, so the bill is dead for this session

They really are nuts in the Legislature. Even the idiot voters surely don’t support this massive handout to illegals

Next time, put a mirror above the line where Newsom signs. He will be admiring himself and probably sign anything.

It also violates California’s state constitution prohibition against gifts of public funds.
