What is a ‘whoopie pie’?................
Northern slang for a cake with a cream filling. The most common is chocolate cake with white frosting (think Hostess cakes, but with each bakery having a homemade tweak). But I've seen other cakes with other fillings like jelly still called "whoopie pies".

The world's largest whoopie pie was created in South Portland, Maine, on March 26, 2011, weighing in at 1,062 lb (481.7 kg). The town of Dover-Foxcroft, in Piscataquis County, Maine, has hosted the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival since 2009. In 2014, more than 7,500 people attended the festival. The 2013 festival had eight different whoopie pie vendors in attendance. Bakers from across Maine compete for top whoopie pie in a number of categories.
The description Jesse Kelly gave last week about them makes me think moon pie without the chocolate coating and different flavored “cookie” outsides. His story about getting them from his sister. blueberry iirc and then leaving them out in the kitchen to torment his boys had me laughing.

I think whoopie pies are found more in the northeastern states. They are a pleasant pastry. If I remember right, they are either boughten or homemade chocolate cake-like with a cream filling.
