A government scheme to use vacant military land for new homes was quietly shelved two years ago without a single house being built.
The plan was meant to deliver up to 10,000 new homes, but came to an end after the Ministry of Defence (MoD) withdrew most of the chosen sites from the programme.
Earlier this year the MoD identified further surplus "brownfield" land that could be used for almost 35,000 new homes.
But the BBC can reveal that none of that land has yet been released or sold by the government either.

Because it's largely by design. They restrict supply through regulation and screw young people.
New gov't claims it'll build 1.5 million new homes in England and Wales. We'll see about that.. 🙄
Over-population + lack of building
= Toxic combination
They restrict supply through regulation and SCREW YOUNG PEOPLE.”.

IDK...
Recreational drugs and tattoos are pricy.
I hear a lot of complaints on BBC about high prices but they never point to the real reasons
You will own nothing and you will be happy.
Lease car/home forever. That’s the idea.
Also a central bank digital currency?
Some of us remember what Carter did that caused interest rates to skyrocket. T-Bill rates were over 15%.
At that time, my passbook savings account at my credit union was paying 15%.
How does government restrictung supply in the United Kingdom affect house prices in the USA?
Our first home mortgage was 18.5%
The problem is that our national debt is so high that if interest rates hit 8.4% it takes 100% of our General Fund Revenue just to pay interest. That leaves nothing to run the government.
Our country is way beyond bankrupt no matter who wins the election.
Could be simple laziness.
Selling government land isn’t easy. There are always tons of red tape that restricts how government land can be sold.
And the buyer has a lot of hoops to jump through as well.
The excerpt also mentions Brown Fields which suggest that the land has some kind of contamination from previous use. That brings potential liability that would be undesirable.
All of this creates a lot of work with little reward for the bureaucrat.
Government bureaucrats don’t like tedious work.
Exaxtly!
Construction jobs are on a high right now.
It’s who’s filling those positions that is the issue... foreigner labor. The various unions are doing a disservice to its American labor force, bypassing and recruiting citizens. Right-to-work states must be picking up foreign/squatter labor at home improvement store parking lots ad hoc. Livin’ the ‘merican dream...
I was stationed in Guam in the early 80s. Federal government shutdown down the base and turned it over to the locals in the 90s. Turned into a slum area real quick. Same thing happened at NAS Babers Point Hawaii.. base is closed, turned over to the locals and became an immediate shxthole.
Government needs to stay out of people’s lives at all levels because they suck at everything.
“Our first home mortgage was 18.5%”
With 10% down...
That was a big incentive to me for shifting to the trades onboard freighters. Luckily it worked out. Including my military seatime, I was out to sea for over 18 years. Never bothered with certs for crude carriers, the pay was better, but the risks were greater as well.
Correction: government employees don’t like WORK...especially anything that might assist the citizens.
I was once peripherally involved with the closing of an SAC Air Force base during the 1980s after Jimma Carter decimated the military. It included sufficient housing for a city of 10,000 inhabitants. The base was turned over to the county in which it was located, and most of the housing was destroyed.
That seemed like a terrific waste at the time. I wouldn’t be surprised if similar housing is available now that resident Biden and Komrade Harris are responsible for similar military reductions.
