House of the Rising Sun is one of those songs that has no ‘origin’.

It predates recording media and is lost in history. Was probably a standard of Minstrel shows before the Civil War, and the lyrics are changed from generation to generation. The tune and rhythm seem to be the only things that are near constant...........

It’s in the folk idiom, so no one knows about versions where there’s no living practitioners, but that’s the first known recording. It’s never been one I’d want to listen to, but I just posted the Frijid Pink version, which is my favorite.
