Like I said, I totally get your argument and agree with your statement above. However, I’m not convinced that RFK Jr’s supporters will do much to help Trump out. I also have a deep distrust of the Kennedys as they have a strain of recklessness running through the family.

I think they have conducted polls that show Harris runs better against Trump when Junior is not in the mix. Junior clearly takes votes from both candidates.
If not for Ralph Nadar, Al Gore would have won Florida in 2000, outright, regardless of hanging chads. Hence the push for ranked choice, sort of a runoff built into the first round. Voters can vent steam by voting for Nadar, but when it counts Gore still gets their vote.
Jill Stein is undoubtedly bleeding votes from Harris. I think the fear is that since Junior is a nominal Democrat, and by birth an hereditary member of the Democrat Aristocracy, Harris is ever but one gaff away from driving millions of loyal Democrats to pull the lever for Junior. If Harris can stay on topic and not embarrass herself and her party the net effect of RFK is favorable to the Democrats, if small. If one black swan appears in October, for instance a major terror attack in the United States, or China invades Taiwan, or Harris has a disastrous debate, RFK is a refuge for loyal Democrats who will never vote for a Republican.

His staying in the race and in the news reminds Democrat voters of what their party used to stand for compared to what it is now. This helps Trump. The press can cover for Harris only so far. She cannot escape she is the Vice President, the Democratic Nominee, and has to campaign for herself, not through proxies.
If Kennedy is in the running to draw attention to issues and not act as a spoiler, after the Democrat Convention he should announce he is withdrawing from the race. The long he holds out, the more he becomes a spoiler which undermines his message. Voters don't like obvious spoilers.
I also have low confidence in my analysis, but it makes more sense than anything else I’ve heard. Trump and Junior are fighting for the same votes. Junior will certainly take votes from both Harris and Trump. Trump is fighting for the “Reagan Democrats”, disaffected traditional Democrat voters. Junior presents them with a non-Republican.
Junior has very little appeal to committed Trump voters. (Like us?) He will peal off votes in the middle, those without a firm commitment to either candidate. Biden made the mistake of showing how hideous he is, and reminded everyone of how awful his policies have been. Harris is trying to run a stealth campaign, and remain invisible. The more voters see of her, the more will look for an alternative. Junior presents an alternative.
Trump is a known quantity. Voters already have an opinion about him. Those who remain persuadable make look to Junior if they begin to realize how awful and unlikeable Harris is. Harris is not thrashing about proposing price controls on meat. I mean this the friggin’ Hugo Chavez playbook. There is no way to put lipstick on this pig.
