I stayed in when my unit was facing deployment, my Reserve unit, during the first Iraq war. My husband and I were discussing nannies because I had a new baby. As it turned out, my unit ended up not being called up. But it was a nerve-wracking time, and if called, I was fully prepared to pack up and head out. If you are a real military person, you want to be there if anything is going on. I was a female Army officer at the time. Walz gets nothing but my disdain.
My reserve unit was mobilized in Nov 2001 supporting the 101st. In Jan 2002 the Div asked me to volunteer for single man Afghanistan deployment, which I did. Even though I was the CDR I had 2 officers fully qualified to replace me. I reported to the Chief of Staff, he said they were testing me to see if I was supportive of the Division, he said I passed.
