MANCHESTER, N.H. — After more than 50 years of rock ‘n’ roll, Aerosmith is retiring from performing.
The announcement came during the band’s farewell tour on Friday.
The reason for the band’s early retirement is their lead singer, Steven Tyler’s vocal injury.
“Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision – as a band of brothers – to retire from the touring stage,” said Aerosmith.
Tyler injured his vocal cords last September during an earlier show on the band’s 40-date “Peace Out: The Farewell Tour.” According to Tyler, the injury was so severe that it caused bleeding.
“The voice box is comprised of both cartilage and bone. So, when a fracture occurs in the voice box, the actual positioning of the structures that have to move can be altered, and not function as efficiently,” said Dr. Steven Zeitels from Massachusetts General Hospital Voice Center.

Saw them in 1978.......................
I have tickets for Aerosmith and The Black Crowes on Halloween. I am a fan of Aerosmith but I wanted to finally see The Black Crowes. Over the decades I have been unable to see them for one reason or another. Lost hope when they broke up. To me they were the last Great band.
No more toys in the attic.
Aren’t they still touring with their original lineup?
Very unusual for a band to last this long without a ton of lineup changes.
But I really get her going
When I whip out my big ten inch ...
But you can still listen to their Big Ten-Inch Record.
Pretty much Tyler and Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton Joey Kramer and Brad Whitford. Age catches up to you.
I guess Jamie doesn’t have a gun.
I’m surprised his voice lasted as long as it did.
ZZ Top was the other one that comes to mind, until Dusty Hill passed.
He's around 76 years old, He has been called the "Demon of Screamin'" due to his high screams and his powerful wide vocal range. That doesn't last forever.
Rock n Roll wasn’t designed for 76 year-olds
Have they ever said how he fractured his larync? That’s pretty hard to do unless you get punched in the throat.
They were trying to do way too many shows too close together. I had tickets last year and it was cancelled. I did not re-buy knowing the schedule was still the same.
Mostly. They punted the drummer.
Too bad Carrie took the opening on American Idol
Which Farewell Tour was this?
That’s like ice cream topped with with whipped ice milk.
“high screams” and “powerfully wide vocal range” are pretty much mutually exclusive.
