I would call it a failure of leadership, because when allowed repeatedly, it becomes purposeful.
Years of it begin to look like emergency censorship via debate derailment, using a pile on trigger process that seems to have been gaining traction in these threads for years now.
As a political science methodology, it’s not even a modern tactic.
But it can be a personally satisfying one for some, and devastatingly effective as a team tactic.
That’s why I was warned along with the rest in IBM’s New Manager School,
to prevent such processes from taking hold in our departments, by as openly debating the issues raised as possible, with both our teams and our higher management if needed.
