500 feet tall isn’t that high at all for a parachute deployment. You would pretty much need to have it deploy immediately.

I recall from Jump School that by the time you count to 4, and your parachute deploys, you’ve dropped over 200 feet. We jumping at 1200 feet. I’m glad I never had to deploy the reserve chute.
