Sorry, the Mediterranean in North Africa is not the Middle East.
The U.S. didn’t have the military capability to deal with piracy on the high seas back in the 1790s. We barely had a navy at the time. One of the negative consequences of the American Revolution was that Britain stopped serving as protection for our vessels along these major trade routes.
