VANITY - New Computer Recommendations?
Question

Hey folks. My current computer, while relatively new at about 18 months, has been problematic since purchase. Since it was only a lateral move in performance, I'd like to upgrade to a new machine, a problem-free one.
These are the specifications I am looking for:
- Not Intel-based. I hear Intel is having major problems with their chips lately, and that the chips are simply frying outright. Maybe that is only for a certain set of chips, so I could be convinced to return to Intel, but I'm leaning towards AMD or other mainstream chipsets.
- I'd like it optimized for gaming and computer application development, and to a much lesser extent, media creation.
- At least a 1 TB SSD primary drive. 2 TB would be even better, but 1 would suffice.
- Wouldn't mind 32G of memory but I can throw that in later.
- Monitor unnecessary. I have 2 good ones.
- No need for secondary drives, I have a bunch of those I can hang off the new machine.
- I can afford about $1700 or so after taxes.
I'd like to hear my fellow FReeper recommendations! Lenovo seems to be a decent brand and seems to gravitate towards AMD. I'm not a big fan of HP (this current problematic machine is HP, AMD Ryzen 5) but I can be convinced.

Lian Li O11 Vision Tempered Glass ATX Mid-Tower Computer Case - Black. It’s more like a mid-tower “cube” and sexy AF. $109. Easy to build in this case too, plenty of room.

Excellent. I will try my own build. Those parts, you know they are compatible?

Stay well grounded. ;-) Correct. Get a ground strap that goes around your wrist and clips to ground.
I've used latex gloves to avoid static discharge too.

Those parts, you know they are compatible? Yes sir. For fact.
I can tell you where to buy the parts, have it built for you (for a fee of course) and have them ship it to you. It won't be me, I have too much other stuff on my plate right now, otherwise I'd do you a solid.

Hi Guy.
Let me know what you get.
Even though I’m not a gamer or at your level of expertise.
My Levono is going south.

Have you looked at CyberPowerPC ? I bought a gaming desktop from them coming up on 2 years soon and it has been great. I did go overboard a bit and got fairly silly on specs and came in at a price point around double what you were thinking of, but you can certainly go through the options and be reasonable about things and stay within $1700. They also sell pre-config rigs on their site as well as on Amazon and other places, but I like all of the options available when you buy direct from them. You also don’t have the be a super hw nerd as they have a decent bit of info on all of the choices along with a compatibility check to make sure you don’t select parts that don’t play well with each other.

Go to newegg, pick out a case, motherboard, processor, power supply...Then buy it somewhere else.

I echo this approach. The Indi guys are hungry and willing to help build whatever you ask for. Unlike the corporate tools who insist that they know what is best for you and “Here, buy this CCP crappola off of our shelf.” *

“Just get a Dell. Avoid HP like the plague.”
We came to that conclusion about 8 years ago. Although I did have an HP Pavilion — with Vista — that I loved back around 2008.

I’d highly recommend the Lenovo Legion series. I bought one 3 years ago and it’s still keeping up with increased gaming requirements. You can get intel or AMD chip sets. It’s been a very good computer. A bit heavy, for carrying around. But that’s because of the larger screen and amped up specs I wanted.
I’ve worked it hard…. Never had a problem with it.
And, they’re very reasonable in price….. relatively. I think I paid about $1k, or less

I agree on those recommendations too. HP has gone south. Dell has regained ground.
But I still like my Lenovo

I’m looking for something small to throw into my bag when I travel. Now am using an OLD Acer small notebook with Windows 7, which gets me through. It’s pretty slow, though. Gotta have a keyboard; not sliding my finger. I have some time before the next cruise.
