Thanks to nameless faceless bureaucrats the coils used to cool down the hot compressed freon are thinner. While that does make them more efficient it also makes them break sooner.

Yeah, but it last 1/10 as long. Net monetary gain...ZERO.

I got that same info from a tech at a maker of the dehumidifiers used for drying out flooded buildings.

That means using water may hasten corrosion and cause refrigerant loss from pinholes.
