Mr Giri rushed to the location with his team, while instructing locals over the phone on the dos and don'ts involving the snake. After a quick inspection, the officials quickly got to work, using a rod to carefully bring the snake down from the bush. They then placed the cobra into a rescue bag and released it into the wild in the presence of the locals and forest department officials.

''What a gorgeous cobra. Thank you for saving him.'' Another wrote, ''So professionally done as compared to so many videos online!!'' A third commented, ''it is so satisfying to watch him go back to his natural habitat, rescue team.''

It is not what the snakes do to you. It’s what you do to yourself when you stumble on one unexpectedly,

King cobras in particular are not very aggressive toward humans. They also prey almost exclusively on other snakes, including snakes that do pose a serious threat to humans, like kraits and saw-scaled vipers. The saw-scaled viper is (IIRC) the #1 cause of snakebite death in India.

I like your thinking.

Are King Cobras a protected species in India? I can see why they would be.

That is an interesting question.

...The king cobra is listed in CITES Appendix II. It is protected in China and Vietnam. In India, it is placed under Schedule II of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Killing a king cobra is punished with imprisonment of up to six years.

"Are King Cobras a protected species in India? I can see why they would be."

They are. It's the national reptile and the area where this happened is a protected forest reserve for King Cobras.

Also a lot of ignorant comments on this topic. King Cobras rarely attack people and unless it's a female protecting her nest (the only snake to build a nest), they are not aggressive. As others have pointed out, this is a snake eater and if it enters habitat areas, it's usually in pursuit of other snakes. Some of those snakes are highly venomous and are responsible for a lot of deaths.
