Severe storms could break more than the heat in eastern US

As a cold front gains momentum, severe thunderstorms, many packing high wind gusts, will erupt and roll from the eastern Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and middle Mississippi Valley to the Appalachians and Atlantic Seaboard into Wednesday and beyond in some cases, AccuWeather meteorologists warn.

The storms can trigger regional power outages and lead to major travel delays as they approach and pass through the major metro areas. Tree and property damage will be likely in some communities.

In recent days, severe storms have packed quite a wallop in the Midwest and part of the interior Northeast. During Monday night alone, hundreds of incidents of high winds and wind damage occurred from Iowa to Illinois and Indiana as a large complex of severe thunderstorms covered hundreds of miles and triggered at least one report of a tornado in the Chicago area.

AccuWeather meteorologists believe the complex met the National Weather Service definition of a derecho where there were consistent incidents of high wind gusts (58 mph or greater) over a distance of at least 400 miles. Close to 300,000 utility customers were without power from Iowa to Illinois and Indiana in the wake of the storms, according to poweroutage.us.

Rome NY got hit by a tornado.

The Rome area seems to get hit every few years. They get some pretty nasty thunderstorms.

A friend had a live tree come down narrowly missing their house, in Cazenovia. Around 3PM today.

Hi:
Just figured out how to connect on my phone. A lot of trees down here. We’ve had no power for several hours. National Grid trucks parked in our complex parking lot, and the sound of chainsaws can be heard. Two blocks away there is power…very weird.

Tell them to hold their breath for 10 minutes...they’ll feel a lot cooler and help the environment.

Here’s a link with a lot of photos of Rome. It also reports on other areas in CNY. And just in case there are copyright violations for msn with the other post, here’s a link only and a summary. There are close to 80 pictures of the damage.

Tornado, storms ravage Rome and Canandaigua in upstate NY. The lates

https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/tornado-storms-ravage-rome-and-canandaigua-in-upstate-ny-the-latest/ar-BB1q8sDG#image=89

The National Weather Service confirmed the 300 yd wide tornado which was an EF2 was on the ground for 10 mins and traveled 5.25 miles right through downtown Rome.

We have a cottage near there and are going up next week. This will be the second place that I know fairly well that has been hit with weather damage. The other was the route we take through VT to get to the cottage when the floods hit it a couple years ago.

It’s awe inspiring to see somewhere you know fairly well and see the damage done. It’s going to take a long time to clean up. Lots of old trees down, which is a shame. That won’t recover for decades.

Thanks. Power came back yesterday afternoon. Still no internet and Spectrum has no idea when it will be back up. Both my son and I have been out, and have seen no Spectrum trucks in the area. Businesses can’t open without it.

I won’t be able to view the link unless I go down to my car. I have only two bars on my phone inside my apartment. Didn’t realize Canandaigua got hit too. Thank for the info.

I’ll have to tell mr. mm about no internet.

And I’ll be sure to have plenty of reading material.

I read all day yesterday from my books and kindle. At least I can still access books on it. Fortunately I have a bunch of British programs on my laptop that I’d downloaded over the past months, and now have time to watch them. Needed to make more space on the laptop anyway, so this is forcing me to watch them.

National Grid just showed up at my complex again. Several big trucks. Probably have more repair work to do on the poles, and electric towers here.

Power just went out again. National Grid no where around. Hope this isn’t going to be another overnighter.
