I think the Crooks parents may have been trying to counsel/treat their own son, to save him any public record of mental illness. They wanted him to have unlimited job potential and not be excluded from certain positions.
This may have caused them to be less sensitive to warning signs. I read that the feds found explosive components in their house. Maybe the parents never found them because they were bending over backward to give him privacy and treat him like an adult...too much. They may have had some suspicions lately because they reacted so quickly when he and the gun went missing.
Or, they could just have planned it with him and are trying to limit their culpability now. We still know precious little. Frustrating.
