I’m no security expert, but I have been on the receiving side of sniper fire.
Seems to me the first step of the advance team would be to scout out all the likely sniper perches.
A flat roof 150 yards in front of a podium would pretty much be the first place I’d check.
Normally, I don’t ascribe to malice that which can be explained by incompetence, but this is beyond the pale.
How did the guy manage to walk through the area with a rifle and climb onto a roof unnoticed?

I agree.
“the first place I’d check”
The secret service was there to support a proxy assassination of a former US president.
100%
I have been to countless rallies over decades and have never seen a sharpshooter with a long gun on a tripod for everybody to see. And a video going around showed the sharpshooter lifting his head from the scope, then a split second later put his head back down and the kill shot dispensed immediately.
Respect your experienced opinion. Hope there is a fair and factual enquiry, not a Warren Commission sham.
If you never had a day of law enforcement training but you watched a few spy movies you would know rooftops are very dangerous places.
Not only spy movies but westerns from way back when people were always hiding on the roof.
Simple question for that absolutely need to be answered
You are a supposed highly trained, high paid security professional working for the state of the class US Secret Service. SOP is to lock down any roofs with ladder access within sniper range of a high risk target.
However, magically, yesterday you total forgot to secure a roof top 150 yards from the opposition party’s political candidate. A roof top that also had line of site to the egress path the candidate would be rushed down in case of an emergency.
Magically this random nut just happened to penetrate your security perimeter, while carrying a rifle, pick that roof to crawl up onto that roof and get off 8 shots at said high value target before you even responded?
If random people on the internet can see the obvious flaws in the security set up here, why did the highly paid, highly trained people running the SS miss all of them? AS for all the blame shifting and noise being spun out in the “News Media” remember this.
No matter what assets they use, local, county, state, fed, the Secret Service owns the site of these rallies. They are 100% accountable for this “failure”.
