Woman Refusing To Pay 20% Tip for a Sandwich Applauded: 'Out of Hand'
Newsweek ^ | 06/11/2024 | Jack Beresford

Awoman who refused to pay a 20 percent tip on her Subway order has been applauded for challenging a practice some online feel has got "way out of hand."

Tipping might be a common practice in America today but, in truth, there are occasions when some are reluctant to do so.

A survey of 2,000 U.S. adults conducted by Talker Research found respondents reluctantly tip $37.80 a month due to the pressure or awkwardness of the situation.

All those tips add up too, with that monthly figure equating to $453.60 a year in guilt-induced gratuity. All told, 26 percent of respondents said they felt they are always or often forced to tip more than they would like.

XD XD... it’s just a shakedown.

Probably worse in S-hole countries. Give you the “special” burrito for non tippers.

Probably on its way here too.

One of the unexpected results of raising the minimum wage, especially with increases targeted to food workers only, will be the elimination of the tip. Especially if tipped income is not subject to income tax. Did the Trump proposal also make tipped income exempt from FICA and Medicare?

Since Joe Biden has beaten Medicare already.

My first part time job as a teenager was at KFC. We were prohibited from taking tips and were instructed to politely refuse on the rare occasion they were offered.

Same when I worked at McDonald's in the early 70s. One guy got fired for accepting a tip.

Exactly - how about tipping the customer for giving them business?

Sometimes he just drives by and hits the accelerator and shoots diesel exhaust all over me.

You know, that stuff probably can cause cancer.

I just try not to breave when he’s doing it.

Sometimes my cigarette almost goes out.

Have you noticed how the suggested tip menu has skyrocketed?

Not long ago (maybe 5 - 10 yrs), it was something like:

15%

18%

20%

and figured on the pre-tax amount.

Now it’s typically:

20%

25%

30%

and figured with the tax included.

When someone goes to work and their job is to bring your plate of food out like we do at home when we aren't working, and they refill your tea glass like we do at home when we aren't at work, then by all means tip.

Tip when someone does their routine job.

Yep - Taco Bell asks you when you place your order if you want to round up to contribute to the ‘student fund’. Sounds shady as heck but I worry they will do something to my food if I say no.

Guilting is one of the most powerful and common type of manipulation in every part of life.

See my tag line.

“””””how about tipping the customer for giving them business?”””””

Yep, the customer is everything, don’t let your hired help play under the table money games with them and drive them away.

When I delivered for Dominoes some of the kids would get obsessed with tips and try to avoid known non-tippers and fight for delivering to known tippers, I tried to remind them that our job was to deliver Dominoes pizzas to their customers and that the tips were the gravy, the extra, but the mission was to do our job and serve all the customers, and enjoy the bonuses as just that.

Just another measure of inflation.

Personally, I like this one because others cover down for me.

I haven’t gotten the “special” burrito yet, but its coming. Probably time to stop eating out.

They don’t seem to understand mathematical rounding do they? Always want to go up. Never down.

Concur on the bribery/shakedown aspect.

If I am presented a tip selection on any pad, the answer is ALWAYS “no tip”.

Fair warning to those lazy business owners who think it’s good for staff.

it not just guilting, but preying on the fact that is takes more TIME to his custom and type in the amount you want than to hit one of their over tip choices.

It’s a scam.

me too! Giant groceries automatically rounded up and griped when I told them no.

If I’m asked for a tip when I pre-pay and before getting the order I will not tip.

It’s a total guilt trip manipulation and I resent it. And to have to do it in front of the “server”, it feels like blackmail.

I now have a partial answer for this tip jar nonsense.

My 20-year old daughter was looking for a minimum wage job. One place she applied is “Frutta”, a new chain specializing in fruit bowls and avocado toast served at the counter.

Her wage would be $11.35 plus tips.

Employers are using the tip jar to get around having to offer the real minimum wage.

That doesn’t bother me, as no one has to take the job, but it does explain the omnipresence of those things.

Here is the law in AZ:

The Arizona minimum wage for 2024 is $14.35 per hour. This rate took effect on January 1, 2024, and will remain in effect through December 31, 2024.

The state’s minimum wage increases annually based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures the change in the cost of living.

For tipped employees, the minimum wage is $11.35 per hour in 2024.
