Continued conversation about noncitizen voting could chill immigrant turnout, advocates say

Voting rights advocates say a GOP push for legislation prohibiting noncitizens from voting is not about creating laws — that’s already prohibited.

Yet the U.S. House could vote this week on a Republican bill outlawing noncitizens from voting in federal elections. Critics of the measure say it would aggravate racial disparities and is meant to chill voter turnout among the immigrant community.

The bill would require people to provide “documentary proof of U.S. citizenship in order to register to vote in federal elections,” according to the bill summary.

Claiming a need for increased election integrity, the GOP has pushed in recent years to highlight the issue. Florida voters took action on the matter, passing an amendment barring voting by noncitizens in 2020. Florida law requires voters to present an ID or cast a provisional ballot to be compared against a voter’s signature on record.

Cosponsorship of the bill awaiting a vote from Congress is partisan in both chambers. Both U.S. Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott representing Florida have signed on, as have 12 of 20 Florida GOP representatives. No Democrats, from Florida or otherwise, have signed on to the measure.

Given that partisan breakdown, the bill is not expected to become law, but that’s not the intent, according a panel of immigration advocates hosted by America’s Voice, an immigration reform organization, during a Zoom call on Tuesday.

“It’s chilling voting. And it’s chilling voting specifically in communities of color,” said Juan Espinoza, an adviser at UnidosUS, a Latino civil rights advocacy organization.

“The noncitizen nonsense is a broad and orchestrated attack on the legitimacy of Latino voters and other communities who are constantly villainized and weaponized in this country,” Espinoza said.

Harmful rhetoric

He voiced concern that rhetoric about noncitizens taking to the ballot box could result in Latino...

People who are naturalized citizens may stray away from exercising their right to vote because they are afraid of making mistakes, he added.

Photo IDs don't work? What if all of the illegal aliens are voting for Trump? Were they bribed to vote a certain way? Are the illegals prepared to vote for Horizontal? She let them in.

This applies for non-naturalized aliens:

“Q: Do I need to always carry my document with me?
A: If you are 18 years of age or older, you must always carry your Employment Authorization Document (EAD), Green Card, or other proof of alien registration in the United States with you.”

https://www.uscis.gov/tools/uscis-tools-and-resources/information-about-your-immigration-document

It’s not too much to ask a foreign-born person of voting age to produce an official document.

I have to produce an official document to board an airliner.

“1. Civics Test
A naturalization applicant must demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of the history, the principles, and the form of government of the United States (civics). To sufficiently demonstrate knowledge of civics, an applicant for naturalization must pass a civics test by answering a certain number of questions correctly. USCIS is committed to administering a test that is an instrument of civic learning and fosters civic integration as part of the test preparation process.”

https://www.uscis.gov/policy-manual/volume-12-part-e-chapter-2

“2. Special Consideration for Civics Test
An applicant receives special consideration in the civics test if, at the time of filing the application, the applicant is 65 years of age or older and has been living in the United States for periods totaling at least 20 years subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence. An applicant who qualifies for special consideration is administered specific test forms.

“3. Medical Disability Exception to English and Civics
An applicant who cannot meet the English and civics requirements because of a medical disability may be exempt from the English requirement, the civics requirement, or both requirements.”

Naturalized citizens are some of the most thoroughly documented people in the country. Birth citizens usually just have a shabby birth certificate to prove citizenship, or a passport they got through using that birth certificate. Naturalized citizens have stacks of documents tracing their path to citizenship. This is all just an effort to scare Republicans from questioning illegal voting, not an effort to protect naturalized citizens.

The fact that Voter ID is even an issue is sufficient for me to support the DISMEMBERMENT of the Democrat Party - their voters can start a new a party or migrate over to one of the now-small parties, but the Democrat leaders need to go and arguably be sent to jail for making this an issue.

The position of the United Methodist Church:

“call the United States government to immediately cease all arrests, detainment, and deportations of undocumented immigrants, including children, solely based upon their immigration status until a fair and comprehensive immigration reform is passed;”

Basically, once you make it over the border, you are home free. The UMC also opposes the building of any walls along the border.

Any non-citizen caught voting should be heavily fined and then he and is entire family should be deported. The RATS act like voting is the most important thing a person can do in their lifetime and then they let every maggot that wades across the Rio Grande vote to cancel out the votes of every American.

Wait a minute. The Democrats keep telling us that illegals do not vote.

So how does talking about illegals voting chill the illegal voter turnout?

Inquiring minds need to know.

Just a few frantic moments ago the left was in a tizzy about foreign influence in our election, almost exclusively from Russia Russia Russia.

In 2022, 1% of illegals were from Russia and that number is ballooning. There doesn’t seem to be worry about this type of foreign influence from Russia anymore. I guess Russians are a “community of color” now.

If found to have cast a vote, deport.

My wife was born and raised in Mexico. She scrupulously abided by the laws of this country to first become a permanent resident, and then to become a citizen in 2005. As a point of information, she has voted for nothing but Republican candidates, including and especially Trump, since that time. On one occasion, we were visiting a relative of hers in Laredo, Texas. On the way back to San Antonio, there is an INS checkpoint. She didn’t have her passport or any other proof of citizenship, and one of the officers screamed at her a bit that she needed to have her documentation, or she was subject to being detained. He wasn’t going to detain her, but he most definitely wanted to scare the crap out of her, which he did. Since that time, she carries her US passport with her at all times. It really isn’t that difficult.

It is my position that any member of the House or Senate who votes against the SAVE Act Is a traitor to the Constitution and people of the United States. It is beyond question that our laws since the inception of this country have been clear that only citizens may vote, though fairly recently some states and localities have allowed noncitizens to vote in those elections (which needs to be challenged in federal court, IMHO). On the federal level, however, the law is abundantly clear, but having that law on the books without the means or requirement to actually verify the citizenship status of a potential voter is a legal absurdity. Requiring a person to be a citizen as a minimum standard to vote, without verifying it for every single potential voter, effectively strikes the requirement from the law.

One good thing about attempting to pass the SAVE Act Is that every person in Congress has to go on the record as being four or against it. Of course the Democrats are trying to spin it as being a racist Proposal, because when they know, they have lost on the merits, they always play the race card. However, Republicans and most independents in the population should be inured to this game. If the RNC on a national level, and if individual Republican candidates, Don’t play this issue to the hilt, they are more stupid than I already believe them to be. This can be THE winning issue on the congressional level, just as slow Joe’s Alzheimer’s is alreadyTHE winning issue for Trump. This election is the Republicans’ to lose let’s hope and pray that they don’t, because the Democrat party needs to be completely shredded in this election cycle if the Republic is to survive.

Note: the Dems just killed SAVE in the Senate: GAME ON!!!

It’s simple. Threaten illegal voters with felony charges right when early voting starts. Find a few red states and arrest a few people once it’s recorded that they’ve voted. Will the MSM keep it hush hush? What about the victimology democrats. The more they squeal the more scared the illegals become.

I agree. And I would add that any non-citizen who votes in November 2024 will be put in the same paddy-wagon with MS-13 gang members and hauled to the border for deportation.

Naturalized cits know more about voting than every one of the DNC base — the <85IQ folks. That is part of the vetting/swearing in process.
