In Brief: Body Found Wrapped In Tarp At Mirror Lake Investigated As Homicide
Cowboy State Daily ^ | JULY 9, 2024 | Jen Kocher

An elderly man found wrapped in tarp near Medicine Bow Peak still has not been identified. It’s being investigated as a homicide, the Albany County Sheriff’s Office said on Tuesday.

An unidentified body found under suspicious circumstances near a popular recreation area July 4 is being treated as a homicide, even as investigators are still trying to identify the man.

The body is believed to be that of an elderly male and was found wrapped in a tarp at the Mirror Lake Picnic and Fishing Site near the base of Medicine Bow Peak, according to a Tuesday statement from the Albany Sheriff’s Office.

There were no identifying markings on the man, who’s being referred to as “John Doe” until an identification can be made through the use of fingerprints, DNA and/or dental records.

Albany County Sheriff Aaron Appelhans did not immediately return a request for comment by the time this story was published.

“It is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the suspicious nature of John Doe’s passing,” he says in the release, noting that it’s an ongoing investigation.

The discovery of the body Thursday shut down the popular Snow Range site for two days as law enforcement investigated the scene.

The agency is asking anyone with information about the incident to call the non-emergency dispatch line at 307-721-2526 and request to speak to the detective.

The man killed himself, then wrapped himself in a tarp or carpet, for easy disposal. Didn’t even get his shoes dirty!

Its called Vince Foster syndrome - happens all the time.

When I have to get rid of a corpse I always leave them in high traffic tourist areas wrapped in a tarp and taped off in an area with a sign that says, “Film Set - No Trespassing”.

In an hour or so the tape, sign, and corpse are gone.

No problem.

I cannot image any decent police officer thinking that a body rolled up in a tarp was “ACCIDENTAL”.

They don't, but theoretically, the body could have died of other causes, and a person with the deceased put the body in a tarp, etc. for other reasons (see movie "Detour", numerous police crime dramas).

That was my first thought, somebody illegally disposing of grandpa to keep the ss and/pension checks coming in.

It would be easy for a 60 year old man to impersonate his 80 year old father, especially if he had avoided most medical care so there aren’t any real records.

Problem is, they usually aren’t mentally competent enough to do a good job at disposing of the body and it gets discovered.

I do know that SS has more centenarians enrolled than is statistically likely.

Oh, they don’t bother to “impersonate”. They just keep the checks coming in.

But most of the time, it’s not even criminal intent. They’ve got a warrant for child support or heard from a friend of a friend you get the funeral bill or whatever, so they just do self-help, like back in whatever third world s—thole they came from.

We had Africans trying to bury a body (with proper funeral and all, less casket) on an empty lot about five years ago. They didn’t think they were doing anything wrong.

But for a noise complaint, we’d have only found out about it when we eventually put up a warehouse.

Maybe a relative who couldn’t afford funeral costs? Just bag ‘em and drag ‘em to the lake.
