Wind is quietly blowing away coal, when it comes to supplying electricity in the US.
In April, wind power generated more electricity than coal for the second month in a row, according to the latest available data from the Energy Information Administration. Wind briefly surpassed coal once before in April last year, but this time it’s by a much larger margin and for two consecutive months.
Renewable energy production has been ticking up for years but only recently have fuels like wind and solar approached the ballpark of fossil fuels and nuclear power. Last year renewables made up 21% of electricity generation in the US.
However, tech companies’ insatiable need for fuel to power their AI projects and the data centers that support them could mean that utility companies will have to lean more heavily on natural gas, coal and nuclear than would have otherwise. That’s one reason investors like Warren Buffett are investing in energy companies. Tech companies themselves are getting into the energy business and are buying directly from power plants, generally wreaking havoc on the energy grid.
Natural gas remains the main fuel source for electricity generation in the US by a long shot.
Easy to do when you outlaw the competition (coal).
Hogwash. There is no “energy transition.”

zatso? there are two gigantic wind turbines in boston. when I drove by there last week, one was working.
Only because they have forcing the coal plants to shut down.
sounds like a good time to Mandate ALL Government Facilities to use 100% renewable green carbon free energy.
This. Tonya Harding economy. context: Nancy Kerrigan attack...30 years later
Nobody has thought that if you slow down all the wind to generate energy that might heat up the planet?
You’ll need a lot of shovels to clean up this crap
I worked at a large coal-fired plant near Houston for 5 years (the WA Parish plant). We would stockpile 8 million tons of coal in the fall, winter and early spring to prepare for the onslaught of Houston’s summer heat. That plant keeps Houston from overheating in the summer. Wind energy can’t provide the flexibility in output that is needed to address Houston’s seasonal temperature variations.
That is a SERIOUSLY LARGE coal plant - nice!
When there are no more coal plants, wind will produce 100% more power then
Why is coal decreasing? Probably because Obama said “SHUT THEM DOWN!” during his time in office. Our local coal plant is so efficient the company shut other plants down and left this one running WITH Obama demanded upgrades which the plant did not need.
How much of your TAX MONEY is going to subsidize the wind generators?
Can’t even see a scenic view because of the wind generators now hogging up the scenery.
The reason for that is they keep shutting down coal plants not because wind all of a sudden is producing so much more. (look at the graphs) Why don’t they compare it with nat gas?
It could surpass coal 100% of the time if they shut down all the coal plants.
You’re right
It’s BS
Wonder what the reliability comparison chart would look like measuring coal against wind.
Bovine Scatology!
Each one of those windmills require 80 gallons of oil a year.
When you are racing and one side hits the brakes, blowing by doesn’t have quite the same meaning
Gee: Remove coal generation plants from the grid and continue adding subsidized wind generation, what happens?
Dumbasses, those to push this garbage, and those who believe what they want it to mean, right up until they complain when the power goes out.
