I didn't mean to imply that you were incorrect. It may indeed be piggy-backing off Google.
I dislike Google, so I hope not, but you never know.;-)

This may be something you heard (connection between Perplexity and Google). I did not know this (now I do).
Aravind Srinivas [one of Perplexity's co-founders] had previously interned at DeepMind, Google, and OpenAI. He then assumed the role of a research scientist at OpenAI. Srinivas also holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley.
