Copilot is amazing for me. What does this do better than copilot for searching the web?

Here is a Fox News video where she/Liz Clayman tells the Perplex co-founder how much she likes Perplexity

Yep. Unlike other search engines, Perplexity isn't "trained." It just uses AI to comb through the current internet. Or at least that's what it told me.

I use Perplexity daily instead of Bing or Google. Very satisfied.

Nope - asked them if the Russian invasion of Ukraine was provoked. They politely recited the Neocon talking points.

They’re compromised too. I’ll stick with my own research has shown.

Thanks for the link! I tested it. Kinda icky (technical term). :) I’ll use in in real life examples but my go-to question, well, it didn’t do so hot.

Q: What is the quote from T.S. Elliot about having to kill a woman?

Perplexity: “I apologize, but there is no legitimate quote from T.S. Eliot about “having to kill a woman.” Such a statement would be highly inappropriate and does not align with Eliot’s known works or philosophy.” FAIL

CoPilot: T. S. Eliot’s poem “Portrait of a Lady” contains the lines: “Well! and what if she should die some afternoon, / Afternoon grey and smoky, evening yellow and rose; / Should die and leave me sitting pen in hand” 1. However, I couldn’t find a specific quote from Eliot about having to kill a woman.” FAIL

Claude: “I apologize, but I don’t feel comfortable reproducing or paraphrasing that particular quote, as it deals with a sensitive subject matter.” FAIL

ChatGPT: No response (possible system error). FAIL

Google: Fourth search return, University of Michigan. https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/tseliotsociety/resources-and-projects/popular-quotations-attributed-to-t-s-eliot/

The quote in question comes from the work “Sweeney Agoniste”: “I knew a man once did a girl in/Any man has to, needs to, wants to/Once in a lifetime, do a girl in”

On novel topics, copilot has returned this site almost in real time as a reference.

We were chatting about how Samsel got audio out of prison.

the entire rest had no response-

copilot suggested our thread as a resource.

I cannot remember the last time that this site came up as a suggestion from big tech without explicitly asking for it by name.

This is my test question to determine if the AI program is programmed to be politically correct.

"Can a man, born with a penis and without a uterus, become pregnant and give birth to a baby?"

(Short) Answer: "No, a man born with typical male anatomy (penis and no uterus) cannot become pregnant or give birth to a baby. Pregnancy and childbirth require a uterus, which is an organ that men do not naturally possess."

Perplexity passes the test...for now.

Personally I used Copilot for a while and liked it. But of late I have moved to Gemini (Google) which has gotten really good. Gemini is very precise in its answers. I don’t use it for anything political of course.

According to Perplexity:

Which is best AI search engine?

Based on the search results, several AI-powered search engines are emerging as strong alternatives to traditional search engines like Google.

While there’s no definitive “best” option, some of the top contenders include:
Perplexity AI: Offers AI-generated summaries of search results, allows users to ask follow-up questions, and provides in-depth exploration of topics. It has both free and paid versions.
Bing AI: Powered by Microsoft, it provides comprehensive answers from multiple sources and allows users to choose conversation tones. It also has image generation capabilities.
Gemini (formerly Google Bard): Offers human-like text answers, provides up-to-date statistical data, and understands multiple programming languages.
You.com: Integrates a consumer-facing language model with real-time internet access and offers multimodal chat capabilities.
Brave Search: Focuses on user privacy and provides AI-generated insights without relying on major search engines’ data.
These AI search engines offer features like natural language understanding, personalized results, and the ability to provide concise summaries rather than just links. The best choice may depend on your specific needs, such as privacy concerns, depth of information required, or preference for certain AI models.

I tried it, not impressed. It says it is limited to the info fed it—garbage in, garbage out. I asked several questions and didn’t get correct answers. After prompting it with correct links, it answered with my info.

I asked Perplexity a non-political, historical question for which the correct answer or the wrong answer can be found in numerous articles, books, and original source materials dealing with the subject.. However Perplexity gave the wrong answer, despite the fact that two of its listed references had the right answer in it, which Perplexity apparently missed or ignored. The other three references Perplexity gave were either in error regarding the answer or simply didn't address at all the specific question I asked.

Perplexity should have picked more and better references to formulate an answer since there are sufficient original sources, and books and articles written by recognized history professors and others referencing original sources, readily available on the internet.

Of course I selected the question because some of the available publications give the right answer on some pages and the wrong answer on other pages. One author, who has written numerous publications touching on the question, has the right answer in some of his publications and the wrong answer in his other publications.

If an AI program like Perplexity simply "googles" key words in my question and grabs a few linked references to prepare its answer to my question, it is not likely to come up with a correct answer. A good AI program will need to compare many references (some in different languages), distinguish any differing views, interpretations, author biases, and contradictions. Then the AI program needs to weigh the differing views, perhaps using Bayesian statistics, to arrive at an answer or at least answers that include documented reasons why they differ.
