Almost certainly true.

I was at lunch recently with some friends and we paid with cards. One friend asked me if he could have my receipt because he has an app where you take a picture of your receipt and send it to them and after you acquire a zillion or so points, you get a $25.00 Amazon gift card. I explained to him the purpose of that app is to collect information about you but he didn't care.
