Did Churchill leave voluntarily or was he defeated, post WW2?

[Did Churchill leave voluntarily or was he defeated, post WW2?]

Postwar, he wasn’t always PM, due to election setbacks. But he remained party leader until strokes made this too difficult. Eden took over. In his case, the residual prestige from the war may have made potential party rivals reluctant to challenge him.

But parliamentary systems are very different from their US counterpart. A PM is merely first among equals, his tenure subject to challenge on a daily basis via a no confidence vote that might elevate a rival in his place. The US primary system is much more open and a clear expression of popular sentiment. It is also set up so that once complete, no practical challenge is possible.

The miraculous aspect of Churchill’s life that has nothing to do with politics is the way such an unhealthy-looking personality lived to be 90. If he had watched what he ate (and drank), he might have hit the century mark.
